BIG EAST vs. FORMER BIG EAST SCHOOLS

Postby redmen9194 » Mon Dec 04, 2017 10:09 am

So when the old Big East started breaking up and the Catholic 7 were about to split, all we heard was that the C-7 had lived off the football schools for years, that the football schools were the better schools and the C-7 would be a mid-major and never survive. I had been thinking after the wins by X and the Hall what the Big East record is against former Big East teams since the 2013-2014 season including post season. Here are the results to date:

BUTLER: 2-2 (2 wins vs. Cincy, 1 loss each to Miami and Notre Dame)
CREIGHTON: 1-0 (Win vs. Rutgers)
DEPAUL: 0-2 (Losses to Rutgers and Notre Dame)
GEORGETOWN: 4-1 (2 wins against Syracuse, 1 win each against UConn and West Virginia. Loss to UConn)
MARQUETTE: 0-1 (Loss to Pitt)
PROVIDENCE: 5-2 (3 wins against BC, 1 each against Miami and ND. 2 losses to BC)
ST. JOHN'S: 4-1 (3 wins against Syracuse, 1 against Rutgers. 1 loss against Syracuse)
SETON HALL: 7-0 (4 wins against Rutgers, 2 wins against USF, 1 win against Louisville)
XAVIER: 4-1 (4 wins against Cincy. 1 loss against Cincy)
VILLANOVA: 3-2 (Wins against Notre Dame, Miami and Syracuse. Losses against Syracuse and UConn).

TOTAL: 30-12

Most played opponents: Syracuse - 8; Rutgers - 7; Cincy - 6, BC - 5

That Seton Hall SOS  At least we finally played a legitimate former Big East school.

The Big East is going to finish in the Top 3 again this year, possibly 2nd. That will be four Top 3 finishes in a row. The only conference that can argue to having been better than the Big East over that period is the Big 12 (who is absolutely incredible this year)

In the Pomeroy era (01/02+), the four year run is a good as any the Big East has ever had.

I would even take it a bit more...
BUTLER: 2-1 (2 wins vs. Cincy, 1 loss to Notre Dame)
CREIGHTON: 1-0 (Win vs. Rutgers)
DEPAUL: 0-2 (Losses to Rutgers and Notre Dame)
GEORGETOWN: 4-0 (2 wins against Syracuse, 1 win each against UConn and West Virginia)
MARQUETTE: 0-1 (Loss to Pitt)
PROVIDENCE: 2-0 (1 win each against Miami and ND)
ST. JOHN'S: 4-1 (3 wins against Syracuse, 1 against Rutgers. 1 loss against Syracuse)
SETON HALL: 7-0 (4 wins against Rutgers, 2 wins against USF, 1 win against Louisville)
XAVIER: 3-1 (3 wins against Cincy. 1 loss against Cincy)
VILLANOVA: 2-2 (Wins against Notre Dame and Syracuse. Losses against Syracuse and UConn).

TOTAL: 25-8

No lock at all that the Big East will finish ahead of the SEC. It's only a .07 gap right now. And the SEC gets the Big 12 challenge pretty late in the season which could really help them out considerably.

And I would say there's more to look at ratings wise than just Ken Pom. RPI right now Big East is #4, while SEC is #1. It's still fairly early, but still- looking at RPI forecast, SEC is 3rd while Big East is projected 4th. Granted with a gap of .0006, which is nothing.

Syracuse is 2-6 against the Big East since leaving for the ACC...1-5 against SJU and the Hoyas.

I'm pretty sure Georgetown lost the blizzard game against UConn two seasons ago (15-16).
