How about this rule-of-thumb? Your conference has to finish in the Top 3, hell, make that the Top 5 - EVEN ONCE to call yourselves 'Major' anything.

The Big East finishes Top 3 every year. Why are we having this conversation. Its like Kia starting to call its brand luxury. By doing so, it doesn't change the definition of luxury. It should just make your eyes roll. It's not something the people at BMW would be discussing.

It's never a guarantee that a team leaving a conference continues its success. Look at UConn, Cuse, Pitt, etc. They were never the same and fell flat after moving to the ACC. Yes Cuse went on a tourney run but that's luck...their regular seasons are nothing dominant like they used to be. Pitt used to be a top 10 program. Now fell off completely. UConn can't even handle the AAC. So WSU fans better be careful. Marshall is guaranteed to get poached either way.
