Religious Affiliations of Selected Universities and Colleges

Postby Fieldhouse Flyer » Sun Jul 09, 2017 7:00 am

I have long been aware that there are many Catholic Orders in the U.S., but I recently came across this Wikipedia listing and was surprised to see that there are 42 different Catholic Orders which own universities and colleges. The following webpage has links to the Wikipedia articles for each of the 42 Orders and Congregations, links to the Wikipedia articles for all 197 schools, and links to the official websites for many of the universities and colleges.

Butler University - Wikipedia
Butler University opened on November 1, 1855, as North Western Christian University at 13th Street and College Avenue on Indianapolis' near north side. Butler University was founded by members of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), though it was never controlled by the church. The university charter called for "a nonsectarian institution free from the taint of slavery, offering instruction in every branch of liberal and professional education."

University of Richmond - Wikipedia
The University of Richmond is a private, nonsectarian, liberal arts college located in the city of Richmond, Virginia. Founded by Virginia Baptists in 1830 as a manual labor institute for men wishing to become ministers, the school was incorporated ten years later as Richmond College. During the American Civil War, the entire student body formed a regiment and joined the Confederate army.

I started this thread to share information that I found interesting, and to provide an easy-access portal to many sites that other Holy Land of Hoops posters many find of interest. Please respect this sentiment by not posting any 'BE expansion' comments on this thread. There are numerous other HLOH threads available for that topic, all of which are irrelevant for the foreseeable future.

Maybe you're not interested but how many private schools are there in Division 1?
What political affiliations do these schools have?
How many apples to a bushel?
How many Methodist schools in division 1?
How many colleges and universities does Oral Roberts own? Jerry Falwell? Reverend Ike?

Which religious demonination has been the most successful in sports?
Which private school has been the most successful in sports?
Not counting the obvious (SMU) which private university cheats the most?
Is Vandy a religious school? Tufts? Harvard? Denver? Stanford? BYU? Cal Poly Pomona? Gonzaga? Fresno St?
(are the Mormons a real religion or just a way to legalize polygamy?)
Would you rank all the Private schools in Division 1 please? Who is Number 1 and who is last?

Inquiring minds want to know...

"Top tier teams rarely have true "down" years and find a way to stay relevant every year." - Adoraz

I wasn't going to mention that, but since you brought it up ... Dominicans Became Dreaded Inquisitors - Christianity.com

1227 - Pope Gregory IX appointed a Board of Inquisitors in Florence, Italy.
1233 - Pope Gregory IX placed the operation of the Inquisition into the hands of the Dominicans.
1483 – Pope Sixtus IV appointed Dominican friar Tomás de Torquemada as the first Grand Inquisitor in Spain.
1789 - Georgetown University founded.
1826 - Last execution by the Spanish Inquisition.
1831 - Xavier University founded.
1834 – Spanish Inquisition ended.
1842 - Villanova University founded.
1855 - Butler University founded.
1856 - Seton Hall University founded.
1870 - St. John's University founded.
1878 - Creighton University founded.
1881 - Marquette University founded.

So are 27 other Institutions. For the sake of brevity, I did not list them all in my first post.

Both are uncalled for and full of terror and pain.
