don't kid yourself. unless there's a report that says Butler matched the offer, this is all about the money.

So difficult it took him almost a whole 2 days to leave after his cryptic tweet saying he was coming back? Okay. Butler's not blameless in this, but that is a load of BS. I sincerely hope Butler gets the opportunity to torch him in the PK80.

Matta told X that he was not interested in the OSU job a week before bolting. Sean Miller said the same before going to sleep and waking up with another million on his pillow. Same with Shaka Smart. These big schools can just keep sweetening the deal until you come around. Hard to turn down a deal to set yourself up financially for life.

He has job security with an 8-year deal (longer than most initial deals I've seen) and he gets to coach a program with more upside than Butler and, really, more upside than most D1 programs. It's not that money wasn't a factor, but don't kid yourself that it is all about money.

Word is he's taking the entire staff with him unless one gets promoted. So basically trying to cripple the program on the way out. Yeah you keeping spewing that sweet stuff on Twitter Holtmann you fraud.

I know Jim Danko from his time at Villanova, he is a businessman who knows how the world works, not some jumped-up academic. So, what gives? I know Butler is a smaller school, but they own their venue, draw well, and get good money from TV and NCAA units. Xavier seems to be stepping up, Villanova, Georgetown, Providence and Marquette are already there (and maybe Creighton?). Butler is the outlier in terms of the success to compensation ratio.

Sometimes it's not even about the money though. Dayton, from the mouth of the AD, put a salary package on Archie's desk that would have made him a Top 10 paid coach in the nation. It wasn't enough to keep him at Dayton and lure him to IU.

Butler could have put 2.9 to matching OSU and he still might have left. It is what it is. There are 10-15 schools out there that can lure about anyone they want, especially for really young coaches like Holtmann and Miller.

Butler will be fine, they always turn these situations into positives and carry on with business as usual.

This was about money though.

Archie saw the writing on the wall at UD and had kind of topped out. A consistent participant in the NCAA tournament, but UD isn't a program that is going to make consistent, deep runs in the NCAA tournament and compete for national championships. Archie knew that. I think his star was just beginning to lose a little luster. Coming out of 3 years of first round exits and entering 2017-18 with a very young, inexperienced team.

So yes, for Archie it wasn't about the money. He wanted to get out of UD for the chance to win a national championship.

For Chris Holtmann, it was all about money. Ohio State already had their Top 5 or so choices turn them down, and it sounded like Holtmann did too, until OSU circled back and threw more money and a 8 year contract at him. Your line about there being 10-15 schools out there that can lure anyone they want.... evidently that isn't true of Ohio State, at least not in June and the botched process Gene Smith led them through.

For Gene Smith's sake, it's best McDermott turned OSU down. That fanbase would have been beside themselves to replace Thad Matta with McDermott.

Is Steele going to be interviewed? If he isn't, that's great for X.

Don't go there. Chances are a new coach outside of a current assistant wouldn't keep any of them anyway. It is 100% okay to take whomever he wants to Columbus.

Oregon fans were also beside themselves when they finally hired Dana Altman from Creighton after missing on several other preferred choices a few years ago. Dana has made them all believers, and no one in Eugene is calling for his head now after making S16s, E8s and a FF in seven seasons. Of course, McD is a different guy and it could've turned out poorly, but ADs get paid not to listen to the idiot fans who like to bitch on social media. They get paid to make decisions that they think are best for the program.

For all of the "It's only about the money" comments, that's just ridiculous. Of course the money matters, but Holtmann is by all accounts a very stand up guy--demonstrated by his poise, leadership and demeanor through all the tragedy that befell the Butler program during his tenure. He made a decision to move to a school where he will NEVER lack for resources to go recruit and train the best players in the country. There's no shame in that. Yes, he turned them down and then accepted after the offer was sweetened, but maybe as soon as he said no and OSU moved on to McD/others, he regretted saying no. Then when the opportunity came back, he jumped.
