Results from 3/6:

-Being played in Asheville, NC, #4 East Tennessee State upset #1 seed UNC Greensboro by a score of 79-74 in the Southern Conference Championship. Down by 3 with under 5 seconds remaining, UNC Greensboro created a turnover and as a result had a wide open 3 point shot to tie the game but missed. This is East Tennessee State’s 10th appearance in the NCAA Tourney, with their last appearance coming in 2010.

-In the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament Championship being played in North Charleston, SC, #1 UNC Wilmington defeated #2 Charleston. This is the second straight CAA Tournament Championship for UNC Wilmington. As a result, their last NCAA Tourney appearance was last year and this makes it their 6th appearance overall.

-In the best Conference Tournament Champ game played so far, #3 Iona defeated #4 Siena in overtime. While technically a “neutral court” for the MAAC Championship, the game was played in Siena’s home arena in Albany, NY. In a back and forth second half and overtime, Iona outlasted the “home” team to defend their MAAC Championship from last year. Iona is now 9-0 all-time against Siena in the MAAC Tournament. Iona will be making their 11th appearance in the NCAA Tournament, with their last appearance being last year.

Results from 3/7:

-In just their first season of Division 1 NCAA eligibility, the #4 Northern Kentucky Norse captured their first ever Horizon League Championship by defeating #10 Milwaukee at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. Northern Kentucky began their transition from D2 to D1 in the 2012-13 school year and now has made it to the D1 NCAA Tournament during their first year they were eligible. During their first three years of D1 transition the Norse were in the Atlantic Sun Conference. During their final year of transition, last year, they joined the Horizon League. Now they’ll be dancing in the NCAA Tournament. This is just one of many examples of why I would never want the “Football 5” to create their own basketball tournament away from the rest of the NCAA. This is what March Madness is all about; the “Norse” are in the NCAA Tournament… of course they are.

-Mount St. Mary's captured the NEC Tournament Championship at their home area in Emmitsburg, MD by defeating Saint Francis 71-61. Mount St. Mary's was down 31-23 at halftime but went on a 22-3 to begin the second half and never looked back. This will be Mount St. Mary's 5th ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament, with their last appearance in 2014.

-The only unknown going into the West Coast Conference Championship Game was who would get the auto bid to the NCAA Tourney, as both #1 Gonzaga and #2 Saint Mary’s will be dancing come next week. Gonzaga and Saint Mary’s have met in the WCC Champ Game 7 of the past 9 years. The Zags ran away with this one 74-56 in a game played in Las Vegas. With the win, Gonzaga captured their 5th straight WCC title. They will be making their 19th straight NCAA Tournament appearance and 20th appearance overall.

-In the Summit League Conference Champ game played in Sioux Falls, SD, #4 South Dakota State took on #3 Omaha. This was Omaha’s first conference championship game in their history. The Jackrabbits ended up beating the Mavericks 79-77. This marks South Dakota State’s 4th Summit League Championship in the past 6 years. This is SDSU’s 4th overall appearance in the NCAA Tourney, with their last coming last year.

The Gonzaga game was closer than the score makes it appear. St Mary's got to within 5 in the 2nd half before the Zags retook control of the game.
