Is the Big East now a mid-major? Gottlieb thinks so

CBS' Doug Gottlieb today tweeted that Georgetown in now is a midmajor league. Has this idiot looked at the PAC12 and SEC?

I think this first year will be huge with regards to national respect. If we only get 2 or 3 teams in the tourney and come up short in the tourney we will be dismissed. If we get 4 or 5 teams in and 1 to the final four we will be respected.

Big East lost some powers who went a long way in Big Dance. Need to prove the catholic breakaways and 3 newbies are legit. Need to see some Hoyas, BlueJays and others dancing way into March.

In regards to the SEC and PAC. The SEC and PAC have football... Kentucky and UCLA (Florida too). The rest of the leagues might suck but football and the titles keep them majors.

While I agree that the first year is critical to the leagues perception by the media and national public it will not be the be all and end all. Months ago i thought it would be ridiculous to suggest that the C7 would split without a detailed business plan. Well i was wrong. They not only left without a business plan, they left with little planned in regards to setting up the league and its beginning to show. Would I or anyone else advise it no. However it is what what we got so the world will have to deal with it. Does the fact that the league looks unprepared make it look bush this year, yes. Will it look bad if they get 7 teams in the NCAA? No, no one will care. Will it look bad if the league only gets 3 teams in the NCAA? Yes, the league will look horrible and outside a miraculous non-rev performance the league will be lampooned by the media. The fact of the matter is the league is working on a one or two year mortgage of public goodwill to establish itself as a perennial power conference. While the league can hope teams living on past basketball laurels will be able to get them into the tournament it will only be when the conference gains full traction that the media perception is changed and the BE will be able to reach its full potential.

Regardless of the performance of the BE this year in the tournament it will be how fast the league gets its feet under it and up and running that will determine the long term success of the league. A bad year can be remedied, although the bad press and early failures might cost them MSG. However, even a strong year could go for nothing if the league does not step up quickly. The intangibles must be addressed to keep the league at the top of the totem pole. While some thing basketball is everything there are hundreds of intangibles that need to be addressed from publicity to nonrevs to probably things i havn't even considered. Never over simplify and underestimate the power of intangibles.

A) It's one of the deepest conferences in college basketball, IMO. Villanova, Georgetown, Saint John's, Marquette, Providence, Xavier, Butler, Creighton should all be good. That's 7 out of 10! teams. So they're good in the present.

B) In the last ten years of each program, the schools that combine to make the Big East boast 19 Top Ten appearances, 4 Final Four appearances, so they've been good in the recent past.

C) Look at Villanova's, Georgetown's, Saint John's, Providence's, Marquette's rosters...all loaded with talent. That's not including Doug McDermott, an instant NPOY candidate. So they have the talent.

D) Jay Wright, JT3, Buzz, Brad Stevens, Lavin are all established, yet young coaches. Meanwhile, Cooley is building something at Providence and McDermott has a 72.7% winning percentage at Creighton. Mack is a good one, too. So they have the coaches.

E) NYC, Philly, D.C...so they have the markets.

I don't think it is mid major...
While i think it would be better with 12... I think at 10 it is still best of the rest and most likely a power conference. I can however see where it could slide the slippery slope down and i could easily give you a scenario for next year where only 3 teams get in. (not saying it will happen just could happen). However their is a bit at stake in the national media's mind. Especially a media dominated by ESPN which has a rooting interest against the BE.
