In Dayton Ohio today, 18.9 percent of all homes are now standing empty.

The gas mask, the ice cube tray, and the parking meter were all invented in Dayton

Since 2000, Dayton has had a population growth of -17.54%

Joe Eszterhas, movie screenwriter of "Showgirls", once lived in Dayton Ohio

You say that, but have you ever been to to Dayton's Welcome Stadium. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/57/WelcomeStadiumOUTSIDE.jpg

I'll never understand the argument of ESPN's ranking of the Dayton market as a reason for conference selection.

2.0 in a market Dayton's size is no big deal in terms of sets tuned into the games ESPN is broadcasting. They can get more homes with a lower number in a larger market.

But that's not the real problem. If you assume that a lot of people in Dayton watch college basketball on ESPN, that has nothing to do with the Dayton basketball team. They are hardly ever ON ESPN, so all it means is people there like watching other basketball teams. To then go and include the fact that Dayton is on WHIO and other networks all the time, is actually counter intuitive. If Dayton is playing on WHIO, and ESPN is broadcasting other basketball teams and drawing this top 10 national share ranking...then people like watching ESPN basketball...not Dayton basketball.

Mon dieu! That's amazing!

How did Rutgers get into the B1G ahead of Dayton?
Simple, Rutgers has football, Dayton does not.
Dayton has football! In fact Dayton football travels all over the country to play. You could say that they are a "national brand."

More to the point, this article is about viewership of all college basketball games on ESPN. I mean, did millions of Dayton Fans watch them play Temple on ESPNU this year? I suppose its possible based on the info in this article.
Sorry, but non scholarship football is not in the discussion. UD has no scholarship football so they don't compete against Rutgers.

You are correct. The article does actually state the 2.1 rating is for ESPN games only (not UD games) in the 56 metered markets, which is really exceptional. That's 2.1% of all TV households in the market, not just of those that were turned on. Basically, Dayton is #8 in the US in watching teams other than their hometown favorites play hoops.

Which goes a long way to explain why the First four is held in Dayton every year.

For God's sake, he/she was being sarcastic. It is pretty obvious, not to mention clearly stated above.
