My issue is the Creighton pick, far more than any others, signaled that this conference was the Catholic basketball conference. VCU had more success, more population, population more interested in basketball, and was a far better logistical fit in a 10 team conference then Creighton. But they weren't Catholic. Even Wichita at that time was in a larger basketball crazy state than Creighton in a smaller football crazy state. Yet the Big East choose the school in the smallest, most football crazy state because they were a "like minded institution".
I think this signal is a loser in the marketplace and given the ratings I have been proven correct so far. Hopefully, for Butler's sake I am wrong. We shall see what the ratings are this year.

Although it is impossible to adopt a mascot of an arbitrary league team on a web form -- point conceded.
In case someone cares: I am a Pomona College alum, who became a fan of Fresno hence the dogs (due to Pat Hill), and then followed Butler because my daughter attended and I admired Alex Barlow. The dogs still fit so I went with it.
I think Wichita is a good fit: 1) because Creighton is in the league 2) they play good basketball and 3) Kansas is a basketball friendly state. I enjoy tweaking Creighton because your fans lead out on the academic elitism and quite frankly I think you were a horrible choice for the long term market success of this conference. Hopefully I am wrong.

Groundhog Day with repeat comments from me, but...
1. Big East fanbases go beyond just alums and students. Each city owns its Big East team. 8 major metro big league cities in the BE, and 2 Triple-A cities in Omaha and Providence with no other game in town.
2. Adding non-Catholic schools specifically to add rabid Catholic vs Non-Catholic aggressive rivalries is very outdated thinking. That's not our goal and in 2016 i hope average sports fans don't see things in those terms. Also, I'm sure you know this but non-Catholics go to BE Catholic schools too
3. Regarding "elite" status, which youre using as a negative... our BE schools were originally created to provide opportunities for low-income and/or working-class kids to go to college locally, in their home cities. Our schools original goals were the exact opposite of "elite"... in PC's case, that would be Brown that was elite.
4. Someone with a lifetime living in central California will have difficulty understanding the Big East and our fanbases and our goals. It'd be like me understanding the Mountain West, where i'd be pretty clueless.
Also... i think Fenway misspoke about the BE starting as a Catholic league. That was never the intent, and only 6 of original 9 were Catholic.
FenwayFriar wrote:Yes, thanks Billy. Should have said the majority were Catholic institutions, just as it is today. Basically my point was that the NBE is modeled after the original BE.
I wonder what name he posts under over on TurdnetBluejay wrote:FenwayFriar wrote:And technically the NBE is not a Catholic basketball league because Butler isn't Catholic.
He's a big Butler fan. Really big.

The original Big East was started as a Catholic basketball league in 1979 with all teams in major cities. Not sure why you would be surprised Creighton, a Catholic school in a major city, would be included in the NBE. Also, Omaha has a larger population than Richmond and Wichita, so you're wrong there. And technically the NBE is not a Catholic basketball league because Butler isn't Catholic. You might need a history lesson on the Big East.

I an well aware Butler isn't Catholic. I am also aware the question is Butler Catholic a frequent search question on google as many people now assume Butler is Catholic. And your wrong Gavitt would never have and didn't start a league composed entirely of small private Catholic schools. What I proposed is much closer to Gavitts vision. But we shall see soon enough if Big East ratings improve to take you past the A10, MWC and AAC this year.
