Biggest Surprises so far

Postby Hall2012 » Mon Nov 21, 2016 10:07 am

What are you most surprised by through these first couple weeks? Give a positive and a negative:

For me its:

Positive - Myles Powell. The big question everyone was asking about Seton Hall this year was how they're going to replace Isaiah Whitehead's scoring. The answer is that no one player would do it, it'll be a by committee team effort. Well so far, Myles Powell looks like the answer. After a nervous first game, he's doubled his scoring output in every game since (so watch out Gators, he's on pace to drop 52 on you lol), topping out so far with an efficient 26 at Iowa. Now obviously he's only 3 games into his career (2 of which were against weak competition), and his 15.3 ppg isn't quite Whitehead's 18.2 (however, in 11 fewer minute per game), but it's a pleasant surprise to start the season.

This isn't the first time the Pirates brought in a freshman sniper in recent years, but the previous haven't lived up to their shooting ability (Sina, Singh-though he still has time) or haven't seen the floor (Soffer). Perhaps the difference with Powell that has allowed him to have success is his Big East level athleticism, and the surprising driving ability he's shown to keep defenders honest.

Negative - Georgetown. Perhaps I shouldn't be, based on a recent seasons, but I'm stunned by Georgetown's start to the season. They're so talented and I thought they'd finally work their way back to being a pillar of this league, but those last 2 games were embarrassing. No shame in losing to Maryland - the embarrassment there is how it happened. But there's no excuse for losing at home to Arkansas State. Especially right after the Maryland game, you think they'd be fired up to get back at it and set thing right. I don't care that ARST is 4-1, the only way a Big East school loses to them is by overlooking them and not playing hard.

Right now, Mid season, really?

Who exactly are you replacing him with, now?

I'm pretty sure you thought this out. I'm pissed, but the season still has to play out. Firing him now is just making a move to make a move.

The Hoyas have won 3 of the last 15 games. Hopefully JT3 can turn it around. Tonight would be a good start. The fanbase is getting restless (to say the least).

At a certain point having one of the assistants run the program would be no worse than JT3 at the helm. We are officially at that point.

JT3 is paid 2.9M for his last name and that's it

I'm done supporting that bum

Here's another surprise - maybe the biggest of the season lol

ESPN's power rankings include 4 Big East teams in the top 25 (3 in the top 10!)

3. Villanova
8. Xavier
10. Creighton
24. Seton Hall

Positive Surprises:
-LoVett and Ponds living up to hype if not exceeding it...they can drop 50 combined points on any night
-LoVett's shooting ability...did not expect that
-Seton Hall picking up where they left off so far even without Whitehead
-Creighton does not appear to be a 20-25 type team, but rather a top 10 type team so far...exceeded expectations a lot

Negative Surprises:
-Georgetown is rapidly building a culture of mediocrity
-Marquette not as good as I expected them to be

no real surprises so far at the top. good starts for Nova, X, and Creighton.

Seton Hall keeping pace. Butler is right there.

I guess the only real surprise is Gtown, because many predicted them to be in that 2nd tier group. I think it's still too early. Hayes has not even played and Derrickson saw limited time in their losses.

think the big take away from me and big surprise is how much it feels like Nova, X, and Creighton have split from everyone else. League feels much more top heavy than it has post-split.

And that article, under the Seton Hall segment, rightfully refers to the Big East as a power league. Love the respect from Goodman, not that it should be a surprise at this point.
