KenPom and Sagarin Rankings

Postby xusandy » Wed Nov 16, 2016 1:11 pm

It's way too early to take computer rankings very seriously, but FWIW the BE landed 7 teams in today's KenPom top 50, and only DePaul is ranked outside the top 100. Somewhat strangely (at least to me) is that Creighton ranks 6th in the BE with a #33 rank, despite the Jays' big win over a Wisconsin team that KenPom has at #8. The Sagarin system likes the Jays a bit more, ranking them at #28 -- ahead of Georgetown, Marquette, Butler, and Seton Hall at #32, #33, #34, and #43 respectively. But the bottom line is the same in both computer ranking systems -- 7 BE teams in the top 50. We're lookin' good so far, my friends.

KenPom will pretty much be a ladder system until it gets a decent amount of data.

Real time RPI is a fraud because they average the RPI ratings which is garbage, instead of actually calculating the conferences RPI.

for what it's worth.... the real conference RPI's- from Warren Nolan
1 Big East .6200
2 ACC .5169
3 Big Ten .5166
4 MAC .5146
5 Big 12 .4833
6 A10 .4832
7 SEC .4698
8 AEC .4611
9 Big West .4574
10 AAC .4547
Pac 12 all the way down at #13 right now.

Kind of weird that the average team RPI's and actual conference RPI's are the same for the 1st 3.

While I like the result, I like rpiforecast which predicts the final rpi based on schedule and Sagarin Ratings. It's kind of cool to go back at the end of the year and see the graph of their predictions to what actually happened.

Bit of a drop-off in KenPom and Sagarin. Both now have us as "only" the 3rd highest ranked league, although we still have 7 of our 10 teams in the top 50 in both ranking systems. Marquette and G'town have fallen from the 30s into the 40s due to close losses, and X has fallen about 10 spots due to lackluster wins against a couple of opponents outside the top 100.

BE is first in conference RPI on Warren Nolan, in spite of carrying Georgetown at 302.

Based on what I've seen so far, looks like 4 solid NCAA teams in Nova, X, Seton Hall and Creighton. Hopefully one of Butler, Georgetown, Marquette, X and SJU can make a case for the 5th team.
