DAYTON —

Dayton basketball center Matt Kavanaugh, who was suspended last year for violating the school’s code of conduct, has been reinstated by the UD and will play on the team this season.

The 6-foot-10, 250-pound Centerville native averaged about nine points and six rebounds as a junior in 2011-12.

The school is holding a press conference at 3 p.m. today to announce Kavanaugh’s return.

Here are statements issued by UD:

Teri Rizvi, UD Associate Vice President for University Communications: “Matt Kavanaugh was suspended for violating the University’s student code of conduct. We took this issue seriously, and we reviewed it thoroughly, as we would for any student. Matt has met his obligations to the University during this interim period and, as a result, he will be readmitted as a student and as a member of the basketball team.”

Athletic director Tim Wabler: “Matt has fulfilled the obligations required of him to return to the University as a full-time student, including participation as a member of the basketball program. We are pleased for Matt and his family that he will complete his senior season and graduate from the University of Dayton.”

Kavanaugh: “I am sorry this has impacted so many people, and I’ve learned a great deal in my time away from UD. I’m grateful to the University for the opportunity to return. It is very important to me to graduate as a Dayton Flyer.”

Who cares. He is just another in a long line of BWSs (big white stiffs) that they have had roaming the paint.

That seems uncalled for.

Its kind of hard to be uncalled for. This is not all that different than the Pierre Pierce / Steve Alford situation.

Averaged 9 and 6 his junior season - shot 55% from field, 80% from FT. Far from a stiff.

I understand the controversy of his reinstatement, but he served his sentence, so I personally am fine with him coming back.

He is no Erik Stenger. That is for sure. Wait until the big east gets a little taste of "the stingray".

Pretty sad you have to compare your starting center to a preferred walk on, who happened to get a one year scholorship because we had a couple extra.

Dayton get an invite I didn't see?

I was told that only direct Big East topics should be discussed.
Big East Basketball is what it's always been. Great competition nightly.
If the Atlantic 10 didn't suck, why is everyone looking for the exits?
There is a reason why the A-10 left a team in the Central Time Zone...SLU, your move.

In other equally related-to-the-Big-East news, Andrew Wiggins should decide between Kentucky, UNC, Florida St, and Kansas soon
