Nova - last team to repeat?

Postby stever20 » Tue Nov 08, 2016 12:01 pm

The last 2 teams to repeat were-
Florida 2006-07
Duke 1991-92

before that was UCLA in the 70's

Would be a gigantic feat to repeat. Historical. Had 2 repeat champions in the last 43 seasons. With only 3 teams in the title game after winning year before- Georgetown 84/85, Arkansas 94/95, and Kentucky 96/97. So it's been in last 20 years only 1 school with even a shot to repeat in the title game.

I'd love for Villanova to get to the title game for the second year in a row.....against Xavier.....and lose!

Why don't we just project a repeat of the '85 FF, with Nova, Xavier and Creighton in the FF? I'd take that.

I think SJU and G'town fans would like to remind you what the word repeat means. :)

Interestingly was that the last time all 4 FF teams were made up of teams outside the current FB P5? Memphis the fourth team that year.

w/o looking I'd say almost definitely. the Butler year with VCU and UConn in it had 3/4(Kentucky). that may even be the only time that even 3/4 was like that.

These 2 FF instances sited had Big East teams in those fields - Major Conference in 1985 and F6/P6 member when the VCU/Butler runs were made. Nothing "special" in either case as BE teams are Majors since very early in BE history. There is no "revisionist" history in either case.

In order to find true non-power conference teams (2 or more) before 2011 Butler/VCU combo - one has to go back to the early eighties.
In '82 & '83 Louisville and Houston.

For 3 non-power Conf teams back to '79 - Bird/ISU, DePaul, & Penn.
Then back to '77: Marquette, UNLV, & UNC Charlotte (Maxwell).

And the 1 (FF) that got the ball rolling to kill off all independent teams: 1970 with Jacksonville, NMexico St, and St. Bonaventure.
Never been a 4 non-power conference FF. 2 & 3 non power Conf. teams in a FF are historically common.

.

So, what you are implying is it ain't gonna happen. Why not just come out and say that directly? The odds are against a champion repeating - it is clear. No guts, No huevos?

Here, allow me to help you Steverrrr...
Villanova is not going to repeat as Big East Reg Season winners, nor National Champions this 2016-17 Basketball season. (Seton Hall is the Big East Champion)
