Which BE Team do you root for other than yours?

Postby GumbyDamnit! » Tue Nov 01, 2016 5:36 pm

Brought this up in another thread... Now that we've had a few years to start disliking each other I'm curious about which BE program do you root for most in intra-conference games. Outside of the obvious, "we're in 3rd place and if they lose we'll be in 2nd place" type rooting interests, which program do you like to back when you have no dog in the fight?

My list is below.

1. PC - oBE brethren. Like Cooley. Fans are cool. My 2nd favorite college program, easily.
2. SJU - this is a tough one considering some heated exchanges I've had with some of their fans, but if I'm being honest I root hard for the Johnnies to do well. A relevant SJU in NYC is a collective good thing for us. And oBE roots are long and strong.
3. Butler - underdogs. Remind me of Nova back in the day of the BE behemoths. How can you not like Butler?
4. Creighton - I like their coach; I like their offensive style of play; they fill up their arena every night; their fans travel. Met some of their fans at the BET @ MSG and they're just good loyal fans. A really nice program overall. You guys are a Wragge away from being #3 in my book.
5. Depaul - I just feel bad for their fans. This was such a great program in the 70' and 80's. Ray Meyer would be turning in his grave if he saw the fruits (or lack thereof) of his labor. Someone has got to be in their corner, so I find myself rooting hard for them (unless its March and they are playing a bubble team)
6. Xavier - I like X. Glad they joined. Knew they'd be a top program b/c they've always been a top program. The more we butt heads the more I'll both enjoy and hate the budding rivalry.
7. Marquette - Don't have either the same loyalty or same hate as some of the other oBE programs, so I don't feel strongly either way towards them.
8. SHU - I don't know why I have them here, other than you guys have been the biggest thorn in our side these past 3 years and we share a lot of the same recruiting areas. It's a petty reason but I could see you guys up around 3-4 if you just let us win our 2nd straight BET tourney championship like you were supposed to ;) Also in a strange way, now that Rutgers isn't around perhaps I found the nearest program and fan base to transfer my ire towards. Man, I really hated Rutgers and their fans.
9. Georgetown - I like JT3; like many of their current players; respect their program but I just have never warmed up to the name on the front of those uniforms.
Go Nova!

I root for everyone in OOC and March and root against everyone from New Years through MSG.

I pretty much root for every school outside of conference play. That being said, Georgetown & St. John's are my favorite. I just like the history associated with both and love being able to play them twice a year.

I'll play along. Obviously like (most) everyone else on this board I root hard for everyone during OOC and March. During in-conference play, this is my list:

1.) Georgetown- Love their history- players, coach, big-time program, etc. While I believe JTIII would have been fired if his last name wasn't Thompson, I still think he can coach given the right players. I think they'll improve a good amount this year and a good Georgetown is great for the BE.
2.) Villanova- Honestly the NC last year really bumped Nova up a lot in my book. I had never rooted for any non-Providence/Boston/New England team more than I did for last year's Nova squad. In 30 years I think we'll look back at that NC as the moment the "NBE" was truly born.
3.) Marquette- Great history, great uniforms, great college players turned NBA players. As one of the 3 current BE teams to have won a basketball NC, I'm rooting for them to get back to their winning ways.
4.) Creighton- Really respect their fan base. The way they fill up CenturyLink Center night after night, year after year is impressive. When I saw first hand how many fans traveled to the BE Tourney in 2014 (to watch the Friars beat them in the final) I knew that they were legit.
5.) Butler- Love what they built under Brad Stevens (and loving getting to watch him up close and personal with the Celtics). Hinkle is a gem; would love to get there for a PC-Butler game at some point.
6.) DePaul- A true sleeping giant. McCormick Place will hopefully be a game changer for them. Would love to see them get some fan support there. Wins would help do that.
7.) Xavier- Really hope this is their year to make it to the Final 4 and beyond. Also really like the Cintas Center and the atmosphere there. That being said, there's been too much love overall for Xavier so just had to bump them down a few notches for no real good reason.
8.) Seton Hall- I think this subconsciously comes down to my upbringing since age 3 to dislike any team from New York. I figured NJ was close enough so here we are. Also, South Orange is... interesting. Maybe if they wore their old-school script jerseys for every game it may bump them up.
9.) St. John's- Never really liked their fans or players much. They self-inflate their program way too much- the amount of times I've heard they are top-10 all-time in wins is nauseating.

1. PC: Have close relatives who went there and I almost went there as well. Just a very good school and very easy program to root for. Cooley is awesome and it looks like they finally found a guy to make them nationally relevant again.

2. Nova: Will admit without any shame that I have a man crush on Jay Wright. The guy dresses sharp, conducts himself very smoothly, maintains class in his program, and also gets consistency from his players. He also develops his players into beasts by the time they are upperclassmen if not sooner. Nova is not a team that gets many 1 and done's but they sure do get the most from 4 stars I've ever seen. Also have several Nova fan friends.

The feeling from those in the New York area is mutual about those in New England. hahaha
