We play Saginaw Valley State on Saturday. Should be a much better test. They were 25-8 last year and lost in the Elite Eight in DII. Looks like they return 3/5 starters.

I know you can't read much into these but the two guard spot looked pretty good for Butler. I think the key for Butler is how the players around Martin will do because I feel Martin is at his best when the game comes to him, opposed to him forcing the issue.

I know you can't read much into these but the two guard spot looked pretty good for Butler. I think the key for Butler is how the players around Martin will do because I feel Martin is at his best when the game comes to him, opposed to him forcing the issue.

Yeah. This season will be interesting because there's just so much uncertainty. In the next couple of weeks, I think we'll learn the most about this team between tip-off and the U16 timeout in the Northwestern game. Until then, I don't really know what to expect.

While a loss to Penn State isn't encouraging (though I believe last year started the same way, there were certainly some positives to take away from looking at the box score. Some big things to consider are that neither of Seton Hall's transfer point guards played (neither did Ish Sanogo) and they spread the minutes around a lot (the walk-on got 18 minutes, which was more than Angel Delgado).

So some takeaways:

Negatives:

-Khadeen Carrington struggled a bit. He played 22 minutes, presumably all at point guard considering neither transfer played. He finished with 4 points on 2-7 shooting and had 3 assists to 4 turnovers
-Myles Carter. 4 points, including 2-6 from the free throw line, 4 rebounds (3 offensive), and 2 blocks. Not a terrible stat line for a depth player right? Oh wait, 4 turnovers and 10!!! personal fouls...in 18 minutes of playing time.

Positives:
-Myles Powell. Led the team with 18 points on 7-9 shooting, including 3-5 from 3. Also grabbed 2 rebounds and led the team in minutes with 24.
-Angel Delgado. Only played 16 minutes, but scored 17 points on 6-6 from the field and 5-7 (keep it up Angel!) from the free throw line. Also had 7 rebounds and a steal.
-Desi Rodriguez. 16 points in 23 minutes on 6-12 shooting (1-2 from 3). Added 5 rebounds and steal.

Obviously, it was just a scrimmage so I wouldn't declare doom and gloom, but I will say this...Carrington needs to really be a force for you guys. He will be the primary focus of every team's defense, which is probably new for him.

And FYI, I am a big believer in Seton Hall this season. Carrington will get it done. Frankly, he'll have to...or I think you guys might struggle.

Carrington will be a force, the only question is if it'll be at the 1 or the 2. Naturally, he's a 2 guard and we've all seen what he's capable of there. But for Seton Hall to maximize the firepower it puts on the floor, they'll need to have Carrington and Powell out there at the same time, which means sliding Carrington to the 1. If Carrington really struggles adapting to the point, the Hall will still be in good hands with Jevon Thomas and Madison Jones. It'll just likely cut into Powell's playing time as it would make getting them on the floor together tough (Powell's undersized even for a 2, so sliding him to the 3 isn't really an option).

Personally, I think Carrington will be fine at point. It may take him a little while to get acclimated as it did with Whitehead, but it's nice that they have 2 experienced point guards on the roster that will allow him to slide over to the 2 at times. I expect to see him log significant minutes at both positions.
