So how old is he? Because he will meet the one year removed from his high school graduation requirement for NBA after this year since he did graduate last year. I don't think the NBA cares whether you skipped a grade in high school. When does he turn 19? If he turns 19 before June and was a one and done type player coming into Nova, perhaps he never puts on a Nova uniform? Is that a possibility?

In terms of NBA right away, I don't see it. He's got a bit of baby fat and he's closer to 6'8". From all accounts he is very talented offensively and very good rebounder but at 6'8" and a bit overweight, I'm not sure any NBA team is taking a chance on him in the first round. Just expect the Nova strength & conditioning coach to get a hold of him and start getting him into shape. I would imagine he's going to have a little chip on his shoulder for 2017-18.

I agree with you- with a caveat. He'd be one that you could see him test the NBA waters with the new rules, and if he can get to that NBA combine, you never know. So all that Nova strength & conditioning this year could wind up helping him go pro. One thing with him, he's already older than normal- he turned 19 in July. So if he turns pro for next year- he'd already be 20.

I think this ruling is really crappy.

First he was enrolled in a school for less than a semester, transferred out and the new school he went to thought what was best for him was to move him back to 8th grade. So it's not like he spent spent 5 years in HS. He spent 4 + 2 months. And at the time what might have been best for Omari at that new school was to move into a grade that best suited his academic standing at the time. The developmental welfare of the kid might have been well served but when have things like that been important to the NCAA?

Secondly, the rule wasn't even in place at the NCAA when Omari went back to the 8th grade. So the school, the parents, any coaches, etc. had no idea that this might cause eligibility issues down the line BECAUSE IT WASN'T EVEN A RULE YET! That doesn't stop the NCAA from bringing down the hammer. Really?

Lastly, the kid by all accounts, has been a student in good standing, and has met all other academic and amateur BB criteria. So what is gained by having him sit out an entire year? As a compromise why not have him sit for the first semester, prove that he is a good student, and allow him to play 2nd semester?

If that happened, I'd be happy for the kid. Not too worried. If we have him, we'll be good. If we don't we'll be good. You gotta play with the cards you got.
