And before any of you homers start bitching and moaning about this wouldn't happen at the chosen schools, the exact same thing with the exact same result happened to Kansas with Ben Mclemore.

Is it the same issue?

The issue with Ben Mclemore was that they were uncertain as to whether or not some of his high school classes met the standards of being core classes that could count toward initial eligibility. It took them forever to decide (which actually isn't unusual), but they ultimately said that they were core classes and he could count them and that he was eligible.

Exactly what standard of initial eligibility did Spellman fail to meet? Have they even said?

Thanks.

Oops, wrong guy thinking of someone else. It is the same as Ledo however.

Well, I guess Rysheed Jordan may have some eligibility left for you guys... oh, wait.....

Sorry, low blow. That being said, happy that you have something to hang your hat on.

You can't have thin skin while sitting on the top. Are you guys Duke fans now?

This article pretty much sums up the Omari Spellman situation and what a disgrace the NCAA is. What a joke.

Dude, we are still going to kick your teeth in this year. Have fun in the basement of the Big East AGAIN. Maybe you will be ranked around 7th AT BEST. Not sure if that will get you in any type of postseason, I am sure you are used to that by now, but still, if you win more than 1 game in the Big East this year that will be a MAJOR victory for St. John's just the same! GODSPEED!

How is your coaching staff getting along by the way? Not so good?

PS - to the SJU fan and G'Town fan talking shit, why don't you take a look at this article. I wonder if posters on redmen.com are going to start crying again about how bad Villanova fans are because some loudmouth SJU fan on this board decides to start making stupid comments. "I CAN'T BELIEVE WHAT THEY ARE SAYING! WHY WOULD THEY SAY SUCH THINGS?!?!?!" Maybe it has something to do with your delusional fans, coming from a program that has done F'ing zilch to help the Big East in the last 15+ years, don't know when to keep their mouths shut. Bottom feeders.

NJREDMAN, No thin skin here pal. Lets face it, we have a lot to be grateful for, and yes its nice to be on top. I am truly happy for you though that you have something to cheer for and Spellman at least gives you something to smile about and distract you from your recent history/misery. God knows, you need it. You guys still play in the Big East right? How was that last tourney run? However, I concede, the past is the past...Can't help but wonder though, how long since you were even relevant??? But chin up, Slice will help Chris on the sideline and with that recruiting.... oh, wait...

Seriously, talking trash with the dumpster fire that is in Queens?? Win a few first will ya..

This is a big blow to Nova but Reynolds almost averaged a double double when Ochefu was out

From the article....

The NCAA, in it's infinite, pathetic "wisdom" has decided that a fully qualified, student-athlete should sit out from playing games for a full year because he played a few high school games while in 8th / 9th grade and then reclassified

When did he actually begin 9th grade? Whether he played a few games or not doesn't matter. All that matters is when he initially began ninth grade.

I know it sucks and it isn't always practical, but it's a pretty straightforward rule. You have to graduate when the class that you first began ninth grade with graduates even if you change schools or reclassify.

David, I am not really sure. To be honest, the bottom line is when a school like UNC is allowed to get away with all the nonsense they have gotten away with, it leaves a bad taste in people's mouths to see something like this become an issue. I, like most Villanova fans, feel that because we are not UNC, or a school like Kentucky, the NCAA is using us to make an example, meanwhile the football schools blow farts in their face and they don't do anything about it.

It is something most Big East fans should be able to get behind because it shows them if it was their school, they would have to deal with this as well. Also, you would expect most Big East fans wouldn't revel in the fact that Villanova is now going to be hurt by the fact the NCAA decided to nitpick. Another strong year from Villanova will obviously help the Big East, and since certain schools have done VERY LITTLE for a VERY LONG time, the Big East, a league with only 10 schools, needs all the help it can get.

I understand feeling frustrated. The NCAA lives in a world of all technicalities and zero practicalities. When it comes to initial eligibility they're not going to budge on it. The rule itself is stupid because, quite frankly, if you've graduated high school then you've graduated high school. Who cares if you did it in three years or twelve years?? You get the same diploma.

Having said that, this rule applies to everyone. They're not nitpicking. It's not the first time a player hasn't met initial eligibility. When you see kids go to prep school for a year, this is oftentimes why. It's happened to the major programs as well. It's happened to Kentucky a couple of times. What's a little different is that in this case it wasn't identified until after he'd actually enrolled at Nova, but by no means is it being unilaterally enforced.
