Discussions about college basketball these days always seem to be about elite freshmen because of the age of one and done we are in. That's not me saying I think Spellman is or would be a one and done, cause I don't think that, but nova and the conference would benefit from all the positive press that surrounds a really good freshmen.

Obviously it's not going to kill the conference and it's not going to kill nova either. So what's the plan now from a basketball perspective nova fans? Is that painter kid going to get thrust into major minutes or do you think nova just goes small a lot?

Daryl Reynolds will have to step up. Did pretty well when Ochefu was hurt but the Cats will be thin up front.

Jay Wright has short rotation anyway and there's enough guys competing for min already. I do think they need Painter in the front court rotation come March for Nova to make a deep run though.

Well that sucks. Then again if Jay can land Lonnie Walker next years class would be a monster haul, with top 20 5 stars Spellman & Walker, plus Samuels(#41) and Cosby-Roundtree(#93). Hopefully Dylan Painter can step up and play a vital role in helping out Darryl Reynolds in the paint.

agreed that this sucks....the NCAA is a joke and needs a major overhaul.....

i still think nova is likely to go deep in the tournament.....i'm bummed because i have final 4 tickets this year and i really want a big east team in phoenix to root for.....(unlikely my johnnies will be there!!)

Sorry to hear that, Nova (and BE) fans. There will of course be an ongoing argument about the validity and transparency of the NCAA, what its oversight should/can be, and whether this is an appropriate punishment, however I still think Nova will be just fine this year. They are still deep with talent (while probably not at the center position), and should still be the favorite to win the BE.

On the bright side, it *should* make things more interesting for the other nine programs and tighten up the race. Nova will always be our anchor. Hopefully, he comes back next year and is not a one-and-done. He has tremendous potential.

Next man up!

I wrote on VU's board that this is the EXACT same thing as Rick Ledo and was skewered by them Guess what?

And before any of you homers start bitching and moaning about this wouldn't happen at the chosen schools, the exact same thing with the exact same result happened to Kansas with Ben Mclemore.

Is it the same issue?

The issue with Ben Mclemore was that they were uncertain as to whether or not some of his high school classes met the standards of being core classes that could count toward initial eligibility. It took them forever to decide (which actually isn't unusual), but they ultimately said that they were core classes and he could count them and that he was eligible.

Exactly what standard of initial eligibility did Spellman fail to meet? Have they even said?

Thanks.

Agree that this will tighten the race a bit. The 'Nova non-conf games vs at Purdue, St Joe's, and the Golden Domers (Newark, NJ) loom large now. The early conference late December/early January games vs DePaul,at Creighton, and at Butler - then Marquette and Xavier, get much bigger now. Whoever can take the lead initially in the season will have a decided advantage with most of the BE squads sort of even-steven. Makes for a far more exciting, interesting, and unpredictable scenario for the fans. Definitely beats the predicability of the last 2-3 years.

Nova: Dep-at Crei-at But-Marq-Xav (poss 4-1/3-2)
Jays: SH-Nova-at StJ-at Prov-But (poss 5-0)
X: Prov-at Gtwn-StJ-at Nova-at But (poss 3-2/2-3)
SH: at Crei-Marq-Dep-at Marq-at Prov (poss 4-1/3-2)
Gtwn: at Marq-Xav-at Prov-But-StJ (poss 5-0/4-1)

Imo SH, Gtwn, and Crei have the best shot for fast start out the conference gate...

Sorry, low blow. That being said, happy that you have something to hang your hat on.

This sucks. I believe it was a similar situation to Ricky Ledo.
