I think actually this is the perfect time to jump up a few spots. Providence is replacing it's two best players, Nova is trying to repeat but also losing two key seniors, Seton Hall just lost it's best player, same goes for Marquette. I think we finish 5th or 6th this year.

The future is bright for St. John's, no doubt, but Villanova should not be involved in the conversation of teams that St. John's might jump, or teams that might finish in the middle of the conference. You are correct, Villanova does lose two key seniors, but we are LOADED and besides Xavier, Villanova will be the team to beat in the Big East once again next year. I am looking forward to watching St. John's next year though. Should be fun.

SJU is still a play in team but they will be better than Depaul and likely Providence IMO. Jury is still out if Mullin can coach but the talent is better....

King of the Big East Hill three years running and now defending National Champions ...I am hoping Redman was pointing to the larger picture of player turnover and not to the fact that Nova may finish worse than St. Johns and/or lower than 5th/6th. I am tossing the benefit of the doubt his way. I think most of us (not named gtmo) see Nova and X as 1/2...and that 3-8 is really up in the air and dependent on who has the guys that are going to step up, be it returners who develop or new guys ready to contribute.

I too am tossing the benefit of the doubt his way, and I didn't want to come off as pounding my chest or sound like an ass, but again, as far as the mix up that is going to be happening with some teams next year in the Big East, Villanova is just not part of that conversation. PC losing Bentil and Dunn will hurt PC far worse than Villanova losing Arch and Ochefu. Don't get me wrong, Arch and Chef were the heart and soul of the team, but we just have way too much depth for it to hurt us that much. If Hart left as well, than yes, we would be more a part of that conversation.

I think this is going to be a fun year. I am looking forward to it, and I look forward to seeing a much improved SJU team a few times live this year as well. I am not expecting anything groundbreaking, but in another 2 or 3 years SJU has a chance to be a consistent Top 5 Big East team.

Maybe all these painful seasons has taken my optimism away, but you cant expect much at this time. I am still a big believer in the direction of the program, I think we are on the right path, but NIT would be a tremendous success with how young the team is

I totally agree. Anything better would be a bonus. I just hope the fans stay the course. This ship is 100% moving in the right direction.

17-18 Watch OUT. The top have of the conference will have to start tucking their chains.

This is St. John's, so if we don't do that well this year there will be fans that will turn on the program. Some of those fans have posted in this thread ;)

In all seriousness, St. John's fans will be able to tell early on what kind of year this will be. With the team going to Atlantis and playing Michigan state and then some other good teams, and then going to the carrier dome to play Syracuse in December, we will have a good idea what they are capable of by Christmas time.

You have to understand the program to understand the fanbase. SJ is a massive rollercoaster. One season we beat 5 top 10 teams and are featured on PTI on ESPN as a dark horse Elite 8 or Final Four team, the next season, we are terrible. Then another year we have all the pieces and experience, then crumble and miss the tourney. Then another year we are ranked as high as 15th during the season, only to go out with a whimper. Don't blame fans for the rollercoaster of emotions. Blame the results. When I said lower expectations, it's because we have so many new kids coming in and in college hoops experience matters unless you are a blue blood with the #1 recruits every year. So for this year, just improve on last year. Asking for the NIT or NCAA's is just setting up for disappointment. But in another 2 years or so, if this team does not produce in a real way, yes I will criticize the program as I should. Again, this is a program that is close to going TWO DECADES without a single NCAA win. You cannot be nationally relevant doing that. We seem to recruit just as well if not better than most others in the conference, but watch Xavier, Butler, PC, and Nova tear it up and actually live up to expectations. It's our turn. It's about time. That's why I said if Mullin and Matt can't turn our program around and get us to consistently making NCAA's and appearing in rankings, I have to reconsider how much time and money I spend on this program. Hope it turns around.

Jon Rothstein ‏@JonRothstein
St. John's HC Chris Mullin has promoted Luca Virgilio to Assistant to the Head Coach, source told @CBSSports. Virgilia was a GA. #SJUBB
