In addition to what Jet said, the MAC several years ago had a similar arrangement with UMass (football in MAC, everything else in the A-10). Then just recently they told UMass they had to be either all in, or leave the MAC (new MAC rule?). That's why UMass is now independent in football, and still in the A-10. So their new conference rules wouldn't allow UConn to do this either.

The MAC didn't make a new rule; UMass was aware as part of their agreement with the MAC that if full membership was offered and declined, UMass would have to leave after two further years. I do think the MAC knew UMass wouldn't accept at that time and exercised the clause to reduce membership from 13 to 12 (remember Temple was still in MAC as football only when UMass was joining)
