NYE Marathon

Kind of surprised that no one mentioned the news this week about the Semifinals going off of NYE possibly in the future.

It's funny, I think if that happened you could see the Marathon return. But I do wonder if especially given this year has SF on NYE, and next year, NYE is a Sunday- so NFL- if it did return it wouldn't be for 2 years at least.

It wouldn't be untill the 2018 season. I hope the CFP plays always on NYD. That was the glory of the sport forever untill 1998.

that started to change before '98..

'95-'97 they had the Bowl Alliance, with title game on 1/2....

And even before that was the famous Penn St/Miami Fiesta Bowl game to end I guess the '86 season.

With the Bowl Alliance the Pac-12 and Big Ten were still playing in the Rose Bowl on NYD.

The Fiesta Bowl was in mid-day slot on NYD, so NBC wanted and did get it moved for Miami/Penn State.

going to be tough to see the Marathon able to come back...

3 times the SF will be played on NYE. this year and then 2 years down the road.
2 times NYE is on Sunday.

I just don't see a return of something that could only happen half the time. If you want a tradition, you don't want it moved half the time.

Remember his insistence that the NYE marathon was horrible for the league and we'd be drowned out by the CFB playoffs. Now it's the CFB playoffs that are moving off NYE. Chicken Little in action folks.

Well the league DID move the marathon off of NYE. So it WAS an issue.

Also, they've said that they will talk about moving the CFP SF off of NYE. They haven't done it yet.

Looks like it was more than talk Stever.

Redman, it's not the full win you were looking for...

Marathon probably can't come back now...
next 10 years...
2 years NYE is 12/31. Sorry NFL
3 years NYE hosts SF still. Sorry, no chance

Oh, and after the next 10 years- in the next 3 years after that- you have NYE hosting 2 SF. So I just don't see BE returning the Marathon where they would have to move it in 7 of the next 13 years.

I'd like to see the NYE marathon come back, but in the ratings game you've gotta be smart about who you compete with. And football is king in the US. I'd certainly like to see the NYE Marathon come back on the years with no CFP games and honestly, I'd keep it around even when they do have the CFP games. Even without college football to compete against, the marathon is never going to be THE NYE event to watch. But the fans who do care about it are going to tune in regardless.

A similar case is with the NHL's Winter Classic. They chose to move it off their traditional New Year's Day timeslot this year because that happens to fall on the final Sunday of the NFL regular season and they didn't want to compete with that. This is by far their biggest regular season draw every year and it would certainly take a hit- so good decision to move IMO. And people will still have the day it falls on (Jan 2nd) off from work for the New Years holiday.

It's a little different for the Big East in that this event is something fun for Big East fans, but likely won't even be the league's biggest event. The way the league is shaping up, there'll likely be some late season top 25 matchups that will easily out draw the marathon regardless of competing with football or not. I say keep to tradition for the fans because the difference isn't going to be that big.

It's not really a huge event just a kick off to league play. Everyone starting on the same day and maybe a few interesting match ups.
