In other words, the distribution per existing member goes nowhere.

Seriously, the existing 10 could not realize any form of material lift on the media side of the equation. Don't you think they would have announced two or 4 candidates already if it were true that the existing membership could nab from $500 million to $1 billion in incremental media rights revenue?

Touche. I still hope Cincy gets picked up somewhere, I feel bad for my Cincy fan relatives who have pretty much completely given up on the school.

The B12 conference itself would gain additional expense monies: $11 M for 2 new schools, $22M for 4...at roughly 5.5M per school (distribute 90% of revenues). PAC 12 distributes much less due to costs of owning/operating its' PAC12 Network.

I forget where I read it (may have been ESPN), but there was a quote from Big12 leadership that, with the shrinking cable industry, that 'Markets' don't matter anymore, the product does. I'm guessing that opinion will make our Flyer brethren happy, and would be easier to measure direct signups if, say, there was an online streaming 'channel' that alumni outside of the school's region could sign up for. I know I would (living in South Carolina), and my friends from school who live in places far from the Philly area.

Extraordinary article. Best I've ever read on the subject. Thanks for sharing.

There are a lot of crushed people in Storrs, Cincinnati, Memphis, Houston, etc. if they've already taken the time to read it. Good night Irene when it comes to expansion.

With some of the same logic applied - that particularly related to the economics involved in the media deals - I would think that the odds of the Big East expanding went from a low % to 0.

The most interesting thing to me is that the ACC is falling behind in revenue and might wind up being the big 12's target. If they steal a couple of ACC schools, does the ACC bother to call up a couple AAC schools? They still won't be able to make a conference network (which appears to be a dead strategy anyway), espn won't want to pay more for schools it already has, and with the new rules they don't need 12 anymore. I don't see it.

The other interesting tidbit was the part about the subscription based streaming app. That's something we could also do with relatively low overhead and it could generate some nice revenue.
This is my opinion. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

I don't think that Big 12 dollars will matter to members of the ACC. The ACC is just inherently more stable. They've lost only one member to realignment while adding 6 over the years, not including Louisville as a replacement for Maryland. In contrast, the Big 12 almost broke up once in the face of the PAC-12 attempted raid and they've lost 4 separate members to 3 different leagues. Furthermore, they've only been able to replace 2 of the 4 they lost with both being a downgrade from the teams they replaced. The issues with Texas and questions about Oklahoma leave them as a league that can implode at any time. Who wants to leave a Big 5 league to join that?

I agree that the streaming idea is very interesting and might represent the wave of the future.

ACC is more stable, but has more desirable products. All the Big 12 really has is Texas, which is like the hot chick who is so crazy that no one in their right mind really wants to date her.

And if they have money that they could offer to remnants of a post BIG/SEC raid of the ACC...well, things then get interesting. I think it comes down to who bites first...the ACC or the Big12. Its kinda like being in Poland during WWII before Barbarossa.

The ACC's standing in the world is overrated here. You have a bunch of schools there that are revenue and eyeball deadweights: BC,Wake Forest, etc. that just don't do enough to draw. On the top end you have Florida State and Clemson, while good brands, don't have the clout and power of Texas and Oklahoma. If the SEC can eventually convince it USC and Florida to add their in-state rivals then that might be the death knell of the ACC's viability in football.

Now I'm intrigued.

Operation Barbarossa was the code name for Nazi Germany's World War II invasion of the Soviet Union, which began in June 1941. Hitler essentially started the global war by invading Poland in September 1939.

So is it kind of like being run over twice?

I'm sorry, Dude, but I can't feel sorry for UC fans. When did we ever see the time when UC fans felt sorry for us Muskie fans when we were a struggling Independent or a member of a lower-level D-1 conference like the MCC? Now that institutions like Xavier and Louisville are in markedly better Conference situations than UC's AAC, we have learned that it is up to the individual University to elevate its product from within in every respect (facilities, scheduling, coaching, and recruiting) to attract the attention of more highly ranked Conferences. At this point, UC is seemingly "closing the barn door" AFTER the horses have escaped!
