Far Out, Righteous and Tubular Big East Ideas...

Postby billyjack » Thu May 12, 2016 2:07 pm

These are some ideas to add some entertainment value, including some repeats from past threads on this topic, and I was hoping people here could add more to this list...

Here are some far out, righteous, tubular, and non-bogus ideas on adding a little sizzle to the Big East experience... kinda cutting edge ideas that I haven't completely thought through yet...

In no particular order:

1. Throwback Retro Uniforms and Logos. This idea should get 99% approval ratings. Allow Marquette to get a waiver in Big East games for their untucked 1977's, or their bumble bees. Get DePaul back to its great old logo of the little Demon taking a dump on the hoop.

2. Uniforms Add-Ons like Stars. On the back of our uniforms, just below the neck, add a silver star for every time your team made a Final Four, and add a gold star for every National Championship. Possibly add the two-digit year of the accomplishment.

3. Johnny Unitas Style Shoes. Every team could wear Johnny Unitas style high top black sneakers, with white laces. Ask our respective school sneaker providers to make this style. These Johnny U high tops would have a cool look, very tubular, and on TV our schools would be recognizable by having the cool retro footwear.

4. Big East Tournament Stuff. At MSG in Tourney Week, the Big East could have a 3-point contest, a dunk contest, and a rookie showcase. Also possibly an alumni game of some format. Probably hold these on the Tuesday night, before the BET games kick off on Wednesday night.

5. New Year's Eve Marathon. Would take place at MSG, for all 10 teams, from 11am thru 11pm. Not sure I like this exactly. Like a one day mini BET.

6. Big East Sponsored Youth Leagues. BE sponsored youth leagues. Provide t-shirts with our schools' uniforms used. So the kids can play on "Villanova" and "Xavier".

7. Non-Slip Floor Decals. Two ideas for decals. Sticker on each respective court saying "[Your City/State/Region's Name Here]'s Big East Team"... so "New England's Big East Team", "Chicago's Big East Team", "Indiana's Big East Team", and so on. Also, non-slip floor decals can be placed showing sketches or cool graphic representation of our coaches. I'd have to sketch something.

8. Mascot Races During Long Timeouts. Ok, this would be like the County Stadium Milwaukee sausage mascot races (or the Nationals' races with Lincoln, Washington, Teddy, and Jefferson), only with various Big East personalities. Make like full size puppet costumes with BE personalities new and old that agree with this, like Massimino, Thompson, Louie, Ray Meyer, Al McGuire, freakin Tony Barone if we want to... Pete Gillen... and include players and so on... current coaches certainly, have the Cooley puppet race the McDermott puppet race the Chris Mack puppet... you get the idea. I'd have to sketch something.

didnt they do like an alumni 3 on 3 for the first BET with Ackerman as commissioner? i suppose they weren't continued

not sure you'd be able to always have enough rookies for a rookie game every year.

i'd suspect coaches wouldn't want dunk / 3pt contests before the BET. Doesn't the NCAA run their dunk and 3 pt contests during a down time before the final four with non participating players?

not a fan of the on court stickers beyond whatever each court already have. sounds a little minor league to me. like SUNY Buffalo or syracuse calling themselves new york's team (or for that matter, Dallas Cowboy's America's Team schtick)

How about soccer-style "tifo" displays?

We should be able to find enough kids with enough creativity and imagination to pull off some cool stuff.

The new Years Eve Marathon at MSG would never work. The Garden is about 18 blocks from Times Square - no way they are putting an all day event at the Garden on New Years Eve. The Johnnies don't even put a game there on that date during the previous marathons because it would be a logistical nightmare as the trains into the City are packed and there are too many road closures.

This should definitely happen. I'd love for Butler to have an alternate jersey with the Tony Hinkle-era Bulldog logo. You can see it here: http://www.19nine.com/butler-vintage-tony-hinkle/

Butler would never get behind something like this haha. Collier would hate this.

Meh.

This could definitely happen. I doubt the rookie showcase would ever happen, though.

This has already been dismissed for logistics reasons.

Butler didn't try anything with the recent floor redesign. Don't see them adopting anything like this in the near future.

Please God no. The Friars mascot already gives me nightmares. But to see him chasing something? That'll only make my nightmares worse.

Villanova usually rocks the retro/throwback unis a couple of times a year. Here is the best picture I could find from this year but take note of the old school logo on the left side of the shorts.

Xavier use to do 1 retro uniform game a year then auction off the jerseys, though I don't think they've done it the past two years. I saved up as much money as a 13 year old could over two years to get one, got Justin Martins, then he decided to transfer the next year...

I love the throwback idea. If Marquette has any sense they'll do loads of throwback games next year since it's our 100yr anniversary.
