Pirates Review

Postby OmahaGuy » Sat Mar 19, 2016 5:23 pm

Seton Hall's season came to a close at the hands of the Zags the other day. Let's review the Pirates and do a way-too-early preview of them for next season!

What started as a bit of a rocky year turned out to be a breakthrough year for SHU. I really thought the turning point for the whole season was after the 1st Creighton game when we came in and took the to the woodshed. I remember reading that Derrick Gordon (this guy was such an underrated presence the whole year) called a team meeting. He knew about the catastrophic collapse that the Pirates suffered from last season and he didn't want that to happen again. They ended up winning the BigEast Tourney and making the Dance for the first time since 2006.

Who's Out?
*Derrick Gordon-Great glue guy. They don't have the success this year without him. Will be sorely missed.
**Isaiah Whitehead??-I think he leaves but you never know. Obviously he's the star of the show! It'd be neat to see him come back. Pirates should be a Top15 preseason team if he returns.

Who's returning?
*Mike Nzei-An athletic big man who can eat the glass.
*Ismael Sanogo-A very long and athletic wing who's a great rebounder and defender.
*Angel Delgado-Yet another long and athletic big man who's specialty is rebounding
*Desi Rodriguez-Very good guard who can make shots and take over a game.
*Khadeen Carrington-(See Desi)

Who comes in?
*Myles Powell-I've heard he's an excellent shooter and he's a HS kid from Jersey.

Bottom Line: Kevin Willard has poured a little ice on the hot seat. Like I said above, if Whitehead returns, look for Seton Hall to have another great year. Now, I'd like to see some consistency out of Seton Hall. Has Kevin Willard actually figured it out now? Or was this just a one year exception? Only time will tell.

I think there's a good chance whitehead comes back. he is right now at best low 1st rd pick. and i believe he has lottery potential. it is a risk and i generally don't like the idea but in cases like his the reward is there.

they also have few more bigs that didn't see a whole lot of pt this year. myles carter, rashed anthony, braedon anderson. they'll have plenty of depth at 4,5.

Jevon thomas(pg) is a Kstate transfer. a floor general who should be able to soften the blow at pg should whitehead leave.
Veer singh showed flashes of outside shooting he was known for in HS. i expect to see his game expand next year.
yeah and freshman myles powell i heard is one of the best shooters in the country.

even without whitehead i expect to see this team compete for another ncaa bid next year.

I'm really hoping Whitehead returns though I'm not looking forward to his games against us. The BE should be loaded next year--possibly stronger than this season. He would definitely add another marquee name for the BE.

Go Bluejays!

Man, after these results, we need Whitehead to return so Seton Hall can join X, Villanova and maybe Creighton as top 25 teams next year.

I think that Marquette and Georgetown are both capable of that next year

I honestly think Whitehead should come back for one more year. He could play his way to a solid first round pick. If he goes this year and is second round, the money is not guaranteed (I think) and is not nearly as good as first round money. The game in the tournament was just one game, but he seemed really sped up and he tried to do too much. I don't know why one bad game would affect his draft status that much. He has the talent, but needs a year to mature his game and his consistency. Money talks though! SH will be really good if he comes back!

The Pirates may have a chance to prove themselves pretty early next year because, while nothing's in stone at the moment, they appear to be building a pretty solid OOC schedule. After being left out this year, the I believe the Hall is guaranteed a Gavitt Game for next year- hopefully the raised expectations get them a solid to strong B1G opponent. In addition to that, they're part of a loaded Advocare Invitational field for next season, including Florida, Gonzaga (you know the guys would love to get that rematch), Iowa State, Stanford, and Miami (also Indiana State and Quinnipiac- ideally the Hall would avoid both of them but really just can't lose to either). And finally, there's little in terms of details, but Seton Hall may be in one of those Aircraft Carrier games (but apparently not actually on the carrier because they keep getting canceled?). You'd have to think there would be a strong opponent for that one. A poster on the SHU board said he heard Kansas as a potential opponent, but idk how reliable his source is.

Marquette will be top 25 if Ellenson returns but I doubt that will happen. Georgetown needs to prove that they can play as a team after this years debacle before they get any consideration...

I'm surprised whitehead is projected to go undrafted in '16. may be a good news for seton hall. However, I still believe his stock will rise once he starts participating in the workout/combine.
