Hoyas Review

Georgetown has also called it a season and won't participate in any postseason tourney. Let's review the Hoyas:

Who's out?
*D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera
*Bradley Hayes
**Major losses as Hayes was a good big man (Was a big 'feel good' story in the conference since he had to wait so long for his turn). And of course DSR was their best and by far their most talented player and now he's gone.

Who's back?
*Paul White-Missed the season due to an injury. Talented stretch-4 who had a pretty good frosh year in 2014-15.
*Kaleb Johnson-Good frosh player who needs a little more seasoning (development)
*Tre Campbell-Solid PG who's a very good ball handler and passer.
*Reggie Cameron-Excellent shooter.
*Jessie Govan-One of the conferences best froshes and an absolute force inside. Dude is also a very good shooter for a big man his size.
*Marcus Derrickson-Another talented frosh player whom had an alright year.
*Isaac Copeland-Incredibly talented player but had such an underwhelming year at least from what I saw of him.
*LJ Peak-Kid is another very talented player, I see him as a glue guy.
*Akoy Agau-Out before the season even started with a torn ACL. I watched him play several times in Omaha for Central and I honestly don't think he's all that good. I could be wrong about him but I can't see him making that big of an impact for Georgetown. Couldn't stand him either, super cocky player (well, when he was at Central)

Who's coming in?
*Jagan Mosely-HS kid from Jersey. Heard he's a very good guard, athletic, an excellent defender, and doesn't just succeed on the court, from what I heard he could end up as class valedictorian as he's incredibly smart.

Now, the elephant in the room, does JT3 stay or go??? I think he stays because of the strong Thompson connection with the school but I'd honestly prefer to see him gone because I think he's just about lost his grip on the program. Such a talented team and they couldn't even make an NIT. Not to mention losses to teams like Redford, Monmouth, and UNC-Asheville. Now Monmouth and UNC-Asheville weren't all that bad of losses but considering all 3 of those games were at home, and with the big time talent that the Hoyas possess, there's absolutely zero excuse to lose to them, especially in your house. Conference season was extremely disappointing as well outside of the win at Xavier.

I think a big thing is will we see this pressing style that the Hoyas used in the last 2 weeks, to some success, and see it used more next year. I think that could really help the Hoya's out against weaker teams, something that has been an issue occasionally.

Copeland was suppose to be the next star ala Otto Porter but seemed to regress this year. Plus, Paul White didn't play at all. Hoyas got the talent, they just need to put it together....

as talented as DSR was, I just didn't think he was a good fit with the team. he was a liability on D and slowed the pace down on O. and for a go-to scorer he had a hard time creating his own shots.

I think they will have a big year next year. govan and derrickson form an excellent front court duo. plenty of backcourt depth in peak, campbell, johnson and whatever they get from moseley.

big question mark is their wings. white coming back from injury. copeland just never had it all season. makes me wonder if it's more than just basketball related. but both have next level potential if they put it together.

I'm indifferent about DSR leaving. Never was a big fan of his. Hopefully Copeland, Peak and Paul White can have a good Junior year. Govan & Derrickson were solid as freshman . The team is glaringly lacking at the point guard position though. Tre Campbell is ok. Hopefully the one Freshman guard coming in is pretty good. And the team needs to learn how to play defense without fouling constantly.

In retrospect it would've been better had DSR not returned. He always seemed to have a poor attitude and might've stunted the growth of the sophomore class.

that was my thought when he announced he was coming back. would've been better off handing the reign over to the sophomores. Very similar to Gibbs situation at Seton Hall.

The biggest problem was defense. Something that Campbell cannot play. His ball handling is well below average and has a hard time getting to the basket. He shot around 27% FROM 3 it was much worse when you factor out one game against Xavier in january. He is not a pg. nor is he any more than a 5 min player in this league.

Cameron slow of foot cannot defend a more inconsistent from 3 than Campbell. Georgetown would have been better off if he had transfered last spring.

Copeland improving his shot is not smooth again low % from three. Ave. to poor defender little hops. not a good rebounder, plays with little emotion.

DSR played out of position for 2 years but thats what happens when you fail to recruit a real lead guard to both defend and run some of the offense.

First game of the season, in their loss to Radford, they trailed and then applied preasure at the end of the game to force OT. The pressure worked brillantly. Then they stopped applying pressure at the beginning of overtime and only applied pressure once they were in a hole. Rinse and repeat for OT 2, but by then the hole was too big.

Horrible coaching job not keeping the pressure on.

The hole was not too big. The largest deficit in the second OT was a single point, until they lost on a last second Hail Mary 3 pointer. Sorry, all the political crap has me in fact-checking mode.

That being said, Georgetown should totally be pressing more often.

I can see the viewpoints on DSR here, but also think he was pretty important to the team. Without him things are probably worse. Ready for next season to start.
