Blue Demons Review

Postby OmahaGuy » Wed Mar 09, 2016 10:05 pm

The 2015-16 campaign and Year 1 of the Dave Leitao Era 2.0 has come to an end. Let's review and take a "way too early" look at next season for DePaul.

Well, outside of two Top25 wins, it was just another typical DePaul-like season. Those wins over George Washington and Providence were nice wins but that's overshadowed by 22 losses and only 9 wins and only 3 conference wins.

Who's out? (Not including eventual transfers)
*Aaron Simpson
*Myke Henry
*Rashaun Stimage
Henry is a big loss as he's the leading scorer. Cain can step in though.

Who's coming back? (Assuming none of these guys transfer so I could be wrong)
*Erten Gazi-Young frosh who didn't do much this year, hopefully he can improve.
*Darrick Wood-He has his moments and good nights but he's very enigmatic and a selfish player.
*Tommy Hamilton IV/Billy Garrett Jr-Two more enigmatic players whom have their moments and good nights but can also be very bad when it isn't their night. Nice players but not the consistent studs that DePaul desperately needs.
*Eli Cain-By far and away the best player this year. He can form a good backcourt with BGJr. (although Billy's gotta be more consistent). If DePaul is to improve, they'll surround him with more good players.

Who's coming in?
*Al Eichelberger-HS kid from Saginaw, MI. He's 6"7 but plays much bigger than his size. Has great length and a very good motor. Rebounding machine and a very physical player.
*Devin Gage-HS kid from Chicago. I think he's a very underrated get. From what I've heard, he and his Curie team are having a fantastic year. Very quick and smart PG.
*Brandon Cyrus-HS kid from Canada. The most highly recruited of the 3 high schoolers. Incredibly athletic, very good slasher, and a very good defender from what I've heard.
*Chris Harrison-Docks-Grad transfer from Western Kentucky. Excellent shooter. Hopefully he can provide good spacing for the Demons next season.

Overall I honestly like this DePaul recruiting class better than any class Purnell pulled in the last 2 years. Hopefully, they can give DePaul a boost. Obviously this program has been a dumpster fire for a very long time and in order to put it out, it's going to take multiple seasons to turn it around. It'll interesting to see how much these players develop under DL from season to season because there was no improvement at all under Purnell. Hopefully DePaul will take some steps toward improvement next season. I'll look at it as a process of baby steps.

DePaul's got four kids signed up for next year already, and I wouldn't be shocked to see that balloon to six or seven. After Cain and Garrett, I'm not sure there's another player on the roster who should feel completely "safe" about their spot moving forward.

The good news is that the reports on Cyrus and Gage are very positive. And you'd think that Harrison-Docks should help immediately.

But they really need so much help. They need a true PG, they need at least two big men, they need to improve their outside shooting... and that's just for starters.

Levi Cook has committed to DePaul. He's a 6'10 big man from West Virginia and a HS kid. Was offered by programs such as WVU, Marshall, Virginia Tech, and South Carolina. Demons add some much needed size.

D2 transfer Max Strus is a Blue Demon. Picked DePaul over Xavier and Butler. Now will he have to sit or can he play right away?? Either way, seems like a good get for DePaul.

Kid's a player. Lewis usually plays DePaul in preseason every year, and nobody on our roster could guard him.

Very good get for DePual. His mother is in the DePual hall of fame which might have played a factor. Great outside shooter and pretty good athlete. I know Xavier and Butler really wanted him.
