Houston looked really impressive and having locked up Coach Herman for a while they should remain very good. As someone pointed out on the AAC board:

Houston #25 recruiting class
Texas #36 recruiting class

Also, wouldn't say at all that in football for Cincy, that the quality of opponents has dropped. The Big East football hadn't had a year like this year in the last 3 years of the Big East. Not even close. Remember there was a year where UConn won the conference unranked. look at this year for Cincy. They lost to Temple, Memphis, Houston, and USF. What loss there was a bad loss? The one to USF(only because of margin). None of the other losses hurt Cincy perception wise at all whatsoever. Why has Cincy lowered? Because Tuberville sucks as a coach. Big East Football=AAC Football.

Stever,

All of those losses were bad. The Bearcats were the prohibitive pre-season choice to win their Division championship and the AAC Conference Title game as well this past season! They did neither and found themselves with a final conference record exceeded by 5 other schools!!! Then, with their paltry regular season record just barely qualifying for bowl eligibility, they were thumped badly by San Diego State 42-7. It was a Bearcat and Tuberville disaster of a season!

Temple, Memphis, and Houston were all top 25 teams. When was the last time Cincy played 3 top 25 teams in conference play? It's been a while. AAC football this year was pretty much just like what the Big East was the last few years of football. if not better- remember the year UConn won the big East and not even in the top 25.

Actually, only Houston was a Top 25 team when Cincinnati played them, and they were ranked #25. So Cincinnati played exactly one ranked team this year, and barely one at that.

Teams don't get credit for playing or beating a "ranked" team if they were ranked at any point in the season, even if they weren't ranked at the time of the game. If they did, Marquette Basketball's strength of schedule would be awesome because Wisconsin was ranked in the preseason, and LSU was #22 when MU beat them. Woohoo! Two quality* nonconference wins!

*= Combined record 17-11.

Also, Cincinnati Football played three ranked conference opponents in the same year as recently as 2009 (#21 USF, #25 West Virginia, #15 Pitt).

Al McGuire: "Well then take this one away and bring me the winner."

if that costs SMU 3-4 games, that could really help the AAC out big time. They would have to lose a whopping 7 games to finish outside the RPI top 25.

Stever's decision tree:

Something bad happens in a program. Is it:

1. An AAC team: spin it in its best light possible

2. A Big East team: paint it as a disaster

3. Neither a Big East or AAC team: take it on a case by case basis, with the primary criteria being how the situation either helps the AAC or hurts the BE, even if it is only tangentially

For the AAC, this is by far the best possible thing. SMU going 30-0 or whatever they would be would be worst case scenario. Anything where it makes SMU loses games IS a great thing for them now going forward. Also, any win over SMU is going be considered a great win, which makes it even better.

Temple serial killing aac tourney bid hopes. Take down UConn in Storrs to improve to 7-6 on the year.
