Big East Opening night - Hall/Marqutte & Hoyas/DePaul

The NYE games between our ranked teams are going to get most of the attention nationally but today's games are very important for at large chances. Both Seton Hall and Marquette should be on the NCAA radar in March and Georgetown could be as well if they can rally in Big East play.

Crucial game for Marquette. They can't afford many home losses to teams in the 5-8 group at all. To me, tonight is most important for them....

Of the 3- I'd order it in order of importance...
Marquette
Georgetown
Seton Hall
(note not dissing DePaul, just they with 6 losses would need a ton to get in the conversation).

Up until this year I have supported and made excuses for JT3...if they don't beat DePaul he needs to be fired at the end of the season.

If Marquette does end up losing it could be worse ... at least they didn't lose at home to a .500 Temple team in an rpi graveyard league.

Yeah losing to a Temple team with a 87 RPI currently is so awful. Temple is .500 because they played a very tough OOC schedule. #44 in the country right now.

Marquette has a lot less margin of error than you want to think.

MU needs a win tonight big time if they want to be a tournament team.

Seton Hall's RPI is 42, the type of team you should be able to beat at home if you have March aims.

A home loss wouldn't be devastating, but it would put MU's backs against the wall facing a road game against a talented Georgetown team on the weekend, followed by a trip to Providence. A loss tonight could very easily see the Warriors start league play 0-3 and kill their tournament hopes in the crib.
Al McGuire: "What is this?"
Waiter: "Mr. McGuire, that is a cull lobster. Sometimes when the lobsters are in the tank, they fight. This one lost a claw."
Al McGuire: "Well then take this one away and bring me the winner."

I think it's close to being devastating. Not just with what you say- but after game with St John's on 1/9, their next 2 games are @ Villanova and Xavier. 1-5 with 3 of the 8 shots at the big boys gone already. They absolutely need a split this week IMO.

That Marquette v. Seton Hall game is huge.

I don't think a loss kills either team, but obviously a win would be huge for Seton Hall and put them in most tournament projections and possible receiving top 25 votes. A loss for Marquette puts them on the outside looking in and behind the 8 ball, but if they can scalp a couple of the better teams during the season they could still dance.

For whatever reason I will be rooting for Seton Hall.
