SHU throwbacks

Postby Hall2012 » Thu Dec 17, 2015 2:12 pm

Seton Hall just released a throwback home uniform, inspired by the 1989 look. I'd like to see them bring the blue version back too and use this as the permanent look instead of just a throwback.

Awesome! I wish we'd do this too. Actually I think it'd be cool if the BE had a throw back day, 70s MU, 80s GTown and SJU etc etc. It'd be great for nostalgia and reminding people about the days when we were at the level of any blue bloods.

This is a fantastic idea. There's some good ones out there.

DePaul (1979)

Georgetown (1980s)

Marquette (1974 and 1977)

St. John's (1980s)

Villanova
The easy answer is to wear the National Championship year, but they gotta find some way to rock these bad boys from the 90s.

Sorry, I pulled the images from twitter on my phone so I had to save/attach rather than copy/paste which is why you can apparently only view them while signed in. I agree it would be cool to see at least the original founding members all where throwbacks. Or have every school throw back to the uniform of its most successful era.

That'd be a great moment to do it if it weren't for the bowl championship games now days. We'd want it at a time when there wouldn't be much competition. Which'd mean we'd have to market a throwback weekend or rivalry weekend.

I like the idea of a rivalry weekend. I dont like college football, but I always like that last weekend of the college football season where everything seems to so neatly fit together. This year, on the same weekend, college football had...
Iowa vs. Nebraska
Minnesota vs. Wisconsin
Illinois vs. Northwestern
Indiana vs. Purdue
Michigan vs. Ohio State
Michigan State vs. Penn State (Land Grant Schools)
Rutgers vs. Maryland (East Coast Big Ten)
Washington vs. Washington State
Oregon vs. Oregon State
UCLA vs. USC
Arizona vs. Arizona State
Colorado vs. Utah
Mississippi vs. Mississippi State
Alabama vs. Auburn
Florida vs. Florida State
Georgia vs. Georgia Tech
Clemson vs. South Carolina
Carolina vs. NC State
Duke vs. Wake Forest
Virginia vs. Virginia Tech
Kansas vs. Kansas State
Oklahoma vs. Oklahoma State
TCU vs. Texas Tech
Texas vs. Baylor

It's something consistent that fans can latch onto.

However, the tricky part of a league-wide rivalry weekend is that in the Big East, there are 5 "I-95" schools and 5 "Midwest Schools." This means you will always either 1) need to leave at least two teams out, or 2) need to have one intersectional matchup where any "rivalry" may be relatively nascent. i.e., Marquette vs. DePaul, Georgetown vs. Villanova, Butler vs. Xavier, Seton Hall vs. St. John's.....what happens with Providence and Creighton?

A way around it may be to create a made for TV Big East "Rivalry Week" with established nonconference rivalries and incorporate other clashes. For example:

Established annual nonconference rivalries
Marquette vs. Wisconsin (Dairy State Showdown)
Creighton vs. Nebraska (Nebraska)
Xavier vs. Cincinnati (Crosstown Shootout)
Villanova vs. St. Joe's (Big 5)
Seton Hall vs. Rutgers (NJ)

Crossroads?
Butler vs. Notre Dame

Classic Big East

Georgetown vs. Syracuse (already contracted)
St. John's vs. UConn (UConn always used to pack the Garden. St. John's gets a resume-enhancer)
Providence vs. Boston College

You could do a weekend long marathon with multiple tripleheaders.

I know I'm such a marketing genius now if only the Big East would hire me and give me complete control over the department!

the thing is, the NY marathon is Sat Jan 2- so it's after the NY 6 bowl games.

If the Big East could have a day where all the schools go with throwback uniforms - why not go full throwback? Use a throwback-inspired court as well. The Bucks became the first NBA team to use two different courts this year (depending on which jerseys they wear), and that trend could trickle down into the college ranks - especially a conference where the focus and all of the resources are pumped into basketball.

You could have a Marquette-themed MECCA court:
