My computer ratings

Postby stever20 » Sun Dec 13, 2015 11:25 pm

I have a program that does computer ratings.....
right now my top 10...
1 Xavier
2 Oklahoma
3 Michigan St
4 Iowa St
5 Villanova
6 Louisville
7 Pittsburgh
8 Purdue
9 North Carolina
10t Duke
10t SMU

Big East teams
Butler 27
Providence 34
Seton Hall 46
Georgetown 69
Creighton 77
Marquette 84
St John's 121
DePaul 162

what's holding back Marquette and Creighton is SOS. Marquette's opponents are only 35-46 vs D1 competition. Creighton- 39-44. What's holding back St John's are all the close games against pretty poor teams(right now they are exactly even MOV for the season(worst in the conference- DePaul is next worse at just +0.6, then the next worst one is Providence at only +8.1 PPG. What's going to happen is as we get into conference play, the computer ratings like this and others are going to bomb out the teams(in a good way). PC and Butler play each other 1st game. The winner will make a HUGE leap up from 27 or 34.

How is this an example of him being a hater? His formula has two BE teams in the top 5 and five in the top 50, with a positive bump happening in the near future.

He created an algorithm that allowed him to sneak an AAC team into the top 10.

SMU is 20th in KenPom, 11th in Sagarin, 13th in RPI, 12th in Massey.

My personal favorite on that list is #7 Pittsburgh: 27th in KenPom, 23rd in Sagarin, 14th in RPI, 36th in Massey

It really sounds like his formula is one that is still preparing for a lot of fluctuation mid-season if one of Providence and Butler is about to experience a big jump. Really, all of these algorithms out there are still preparing for fluctuation. Plus, Kenpom looks like much more of an outlier than Stever's algorithm when talking about SMU. All of these rankings still qualify more as trends than actual statistics, though.

You're giving him an awful lot of credit...

I'm all for people coming up with new and better ratings systems.
I think this one rewards margin of victory a lot? Not saying that is a bad thing necessarily. I maybe think if margin of victory is taken into consideration, that it should be something more like what the score was with 12 or 10 minutes left. That would remove garbage time from playing a part in the formula, and tells us if a game was more of a struggle.
I'd be interested to find out what components are emphasized the most.

Hard for me to see X as #1. Maybe top 5. Also seems like Butler and Providence need to be top 25. Georgetown seems really really low.

I'm a big fan of KenPom.

Until he shows us what the algorithm consists of, I don't buy that he has one. I think he's just making stuff up to justify listing an AAC squad in the top 10.

C'mon stever - be like kenpom and tell us your algorithm...

You might not be giving him enough. I don't know what is more obnoxious on this board, Stever's off-the-reservation posts or the reflexive negative reactions when he might be making a worthwhile point. If the original post had another name next to it, it would be greeted with a much more level-headed response.
