After VU I probably follow MU the most among the other BigEast teams. A big chunk of my family (mom, dad, sister, grandfather, two uncles, and aunt, a cousin, I am sure there are more) are all Marquette grads and my nephew is currently a MU sophomore. I was bullish on Marquette this season based on (a) talent coming in and (b) I think Wojo is a good coach. I had the game on last night while catching up on some work and was surprised at how bad Marquette's guard play was on the offensive end and how Iowa seemed to have complete run of the paint on the defensive end. I didn't think MU would beat Iowa but I didn't think it would be as noncompetitive as it was from the get-go.

I think MU will improve but I expected a better performance than I saw last night. They need some confidence building wins ASAP or MU will be in the 8-9-10 range of the BE standings.

billyjack wrote:St John's has huge nads and will keep improving. Their wins so far are all bonuses for us as a conference.

Every team has lost a game like Rutgers lost last night and it sucks. The non-call on the trip at the end was a bad call. Free throw shooting for both Rutgers (5/14) and SJU (12/23) was awful. But a win is a win and it is good for the BigEast. I was impressed how SJU didn't wilt when they were down 16 in the second half after closing the gap to end the first half. That was good to see.

billyjack wrote:Georgetown is fine. They can grab a couple of wins vs a killer non-conf schedule, and will be rewarded for it with a bid. Win tomorrow vs Wisconsin and things are good.

Even with Wisconsin being down, the name recognition Wisconsin has would help Georgetown. I would also love to see Georgetown beat UConn - to bad that game isn't until late January. I have always disliked UConn and enjoy watching them get beat. As much as I dislike Georgetown, I will be a Hoya fan when they play UConn in particular, and anyone else outside the BigEast.

Recalculating the KenPoms and other efficiency ratings to show how CU actually won the game.

Young players not ready for a big time matchup. I was going to go on a long tirade about how a loss like this would ruin CU's post season chances. Then I remembered that were in a big time league now and a loss to a ranked team doesn't ruin a season like it used to. Can't let a loss beat you twice, so on to the next one.

Nice playing in a bit time conference isn't it? :D This is a great conference but I still remember looking at the schedule on ESPN for SJ and we must have faced like 10 ranked teams in the next 12 games or something crazy. This is why it's so important to have ranked teams...especially in our league where we face everyone twice, that means 2 chances to beat a ranked opponent per team (assuming they stay ranked of course). If we have 3 ranked teams, that's 6 chances for each team to get ranked wins for RPI and their NCAA resume.

I think CU fans thought Dougie would be there forever. He was such a tremendous player. It makes sense CU is going through some growing pains, there has been a lot of roster turnover. It's important for CU to get those 3 star pure shooters and have them play to a 4 star level, but at the same time I'd like to see big, strong bodies there who can bang down low. It's also important to remember CU being affiliated with the Big East is still in its infancy. Other BE teams like G'Town, SJ, PC, Nova, and even Marq. have been here much longer. The new car smell has not even gone away yet for CU. We are glad to have you guys and I love how passionate your fanbase is. The attendance is awesome. There will be years where many BE teams are in transition with lots of turnover and there will be years where many BE teams are full of JR's and SR's with tons of experience and household names. This year is a big transition year for many of us so I wouldn't get too down.

I think Creighton fans are disappointed that we weren't even competitive with Indiana. Not surprised that we lost, just that we looked so bad. Indiana has a number of returing players and we had a roster turnover and all of that showed. I think things will get better, but we need to start playing better defense! I was really surprised with Marquette. They are completely out of sync right now. I think the talent is there too, they just need to put the pieces together. One game does not make the season and all of our teams will lay an egg or two before the year is out. I still think 5 tournament teams is realistic!

The thing with Marquette now is that they now almost have to win at least 1 game next week vs LSU and then Arizona St/NC State, and then probably would have to beat Wisconsin. If they were 1-4 in their 5 tough early season games- they would enter conference play at 9-4- with 1 good OOC win. While 1 good OOC win is ok in football, it's not for basketball. They would need to get at least 10 conference wins to have a shot for the NCAA tourney.

I'm actually still pretty bullish on Creighton. I can still see them going 11-2 OOC(only loss to Oklahoma). That puts them in a pretty good place for conference play.. They may get impacted if the rest of the conference continues to struggle OOC.

Well I think every Marquette fan is having a little trouble sitting down today after what happened last night if you know what I mean. I believe Duane Wilson is not as good as we thought after last year, he has stopped protecting the ball on his drives, looks a step slower than last season and his shot from outside is nowhere to be found except in garbage time. Henry needs to adapt to big time ball, I know Freshmen have trouble with physicality but he's gotta learn quick or really focus on his turn around jumper (which is actually decent he's just not doing it). JJJ is doing well, if Duane suddenly went back to being his Freshman self we'd actually have a decent lineup for guards. Luke was clearly frustrated last night and the fouls showed it.

The thing with that though is the OOC losses can add up in a hurry. I mean, Big East already has 7 losses. 5 teams projected to lose in their next game according to Ken Pom.

Also, it's the specific teams losing...
Marquette has 2 losses, with 3 tough games left. The other 8 OOC games are RPI garbage.
Georgetown has 2 losses, with 2 tough games this weekend. Then Syracuse and UConn left.
Seton Hall has 1 loss, has Oklahoma St this weekend. Then GW and Wichita St left.

DePaul and St John's haven't shown much to get excited about yet, and Creighton and PC look like bubble teams- with how weak the conference has started, if that continues, the conference games won't help them nearly as much as conference games helped last year.

Is it still unanimous that we finish last this year?

The ONLY opponent that St John's 3 opponents have beaten is Howard(by Rutgers).

You can't take Creighton or Marquette getting blown out by upper tier Big Ten schools and think that is worse than St John's almost losing to Rutgers. Rutgers is awful.
