Shaka 's thoughts on the Big East

“Those guys did what they felt they had to do,” Smart said. “I think it’s going to be fascinating to watch their league and our league. You ask a lot of them and I think they will probably want to distance themselves from us, but I’m not sure there’s a huge difference.

“I’m not saying we’re better, but there’s a lot of very good teams in their league and we have a lot of depth as well,” he added. “They have terrific programs with great history and so do we. It probably won’t happen because of a lot of politics involved, but maybe we could set up a challenge.”
“I come from New York where, if you fall down, someone will pick you up by your wallet (Al McGuire).”

Good stuff jedi thanks for posting. No games on Xavier's schedule this season with our former A10 teams. Villanova probably has St. Joe's or LaSalle with their Big 5 rivalry maybe both. Any other Big East/A10 matchups? Would love to prove our friend Shaka wrong in terms of head to head match ups, number of teams into the tournament as well as going deeper once there to prove the superior conference.

I had checked to do a head to head with the A-10 like I am doing with the power conferences but there are only six games between the two leagues. St. John's plays Fordham, Providence plays Rhode Island and UMass, Creighton has St. Joe's, and Nova has LaSalle and St. Joe's. That's not really a good sample size to measure up unless there is a clean sweep by one side.

Why would the Big East waste their time?

I was ticked off SLU went to A-10 media day yesterday.
Big East Basketball is what it's always been. Great competition nightly.
If the Atlantic 10 didn't suck, why is everyone looking for the exits?
There is a reason why the A-10 left a team in the Central Time Zone...SLU, your move.

Shaka wouldn't be saying that if VCU had gotten an invite. The A10 isn't even close to the BE and we certainly should not play a challenge against them because it invites that comparrison. We need to seperate ourselves from them as much as possible. I'd love a challenge, but it has to be against one of the Power Conferences: ACC, B10, B12, P12, or SEC. We cannot schedule a challenge against A10, MVC, CUSA or AAC(Aka CUSA2). We need to challenge someone we see as equals.

I certainly was not suggesting a Big East/ A10 challenge by any means, was just curious to see how many of those games were on OOC schedules. Thanks for doing the homework redmen.

That's pretty much what I said as well.

The A-10 should be finding leagues for challenges that fit them...like maybe the America East.

It will be the Pac 12 if Fox has their way.

Amen! We cannot go setting up challenges against mid-major conferences. Any challenge must be against one of the other five power conferences or not at all!
