Every league needs a heel. I think Hurley sort of enjoys being viewed that way and I suspect Miller will get the same treatment.

That's not a slam on him or XU, but there are multiple high level coaches who have had success in the Big East. At this point, Miller has not. He might get XU in the NCAA Tournament next year and XU might be a league power eventually, but I think it's premature to try and place him above guys like McDermott, Cooley, or even Hurley until he shows us that he can coach and be successful with a Big East team. Coaching in the A10 or PAC12 is different than the Big East or so it seems to me.

And while I am not a conspiracy guy, there are people who are skeptical that he will have the same level of national success that he had Arizona without having the same recruiting "resources" that he had there.

3 letters to your last point. NIL. What he did before is now legal.

While that may be true, it doesn't change the fact that he was voluntarily breaking rules.

Fair. But if he can have the same resources at Xavier that he had at Arizona, that's going to be huge.

And I hope everyone on this board at least is informed enough to know that the ESPN/Schlabach reporting on the Ayton recruitment is pretty much hogwash (or requires Miller to be a Time Lord). The FBI wiretap wasn't even set up until long after Ayton had already committed, so unsurprisingly, the supposed recording has never been able to.be confirmed. Because again, it would require Miller to be a Time Lord. Just a hack journalism job by everyone's favorite sports media company, which doesn't exactly shock me.

Shady shit happening at Arizona also doesn't shock me, though. I remember following that story from afar and not being very surprised that Book Richardson did something shady (though I was surprised by the magnitude of his shadiness). Miller has to have known that he had staff members that had to be watched closely, but he gave them too much latitude. Maybe he shouldn't have had them on staff at all. He's definitely deserving of a suspension.

It's hard to rank the coaches outside of Wright who is the clear number 1 (I think he's the best coach in the country). Here are the NCAA Tourny records of the current league coaches - including Willard since Hall has not replaced him yet.

1. Jay Wright 32-15
2. Sean Miller 19-11
3. Mike Anderson 9-9
4. Laval Jordan 1-1
5. Shaka Smart 7-9
6. Greg McDermott 6-10
7. Ed Cooley 3-5
8. Danny Hurley 2-4
9. Kevin Willard 1-5
10. Patrick Ewing 0-1
11. Tony Stubblefield 0-0

Hmmm...
If getting to the dance counts then Mac should be 3rd. If wins count then Shaka 4th, then Mac.

Someone had previously posted League wins... Can't find it now.
If league wins count then Miller is last.
261 - Jay Wright
196 - Greg McDermott
177 - Kevin Willard
169 - Ed Cooley

He won at least 5 Pac 12 championships, so I am sure he has league wins to stack with anybody else.

This should make things crystal.

34th All Time should be good enough for #2 in the Big East.

I think one thing that is clear is that the concerns about the Big East when it reconfigured that it would not be able to attract or retain quality coaches is no longer a concern. Whatever metric you use, we have a very strong coaching contingent. We likely are in the top 3 in terms of coaches. Whatever your thoughts are regarding Miller, he's a legit big time coach and he joins a group of legit big time coaches in the league.

I don't think Wright, Cooley, McDermott, Hurley, Smart or Miller would be that interested in moving to another conference anytime soon.

Ewing and Jordan are more at risk of losing their jobs than being courted by someone else.

Exactly. Another clear indication about the health and status of the Big East.
