I generally agree with you. However, MU is competing with the BUCKS and the minor league Hockey team for butts in the seats. Also, Nebraska does not have the basketball following that Wisconsin has.
MU competes with a whole lot more than that. If we have a Sunday game I can guarantee you that thousands leave the city for Green Bay. There are even people who go up Friday night, spend Saturday in Green Bay, then come back Sunday night after the game. Some residents are UW alums who make the 75 minute drive to Madison for Badger games, football and basketball. The wave has a niche fanbase, but I'm not sure if they are really competitors. I don't imagine very many people would choose the Wave over Marquette, despite their accomplishments (longest active soccer team in the United States, most MISL championships, etc). Similarly there is UW-Milwaukee, who I'm also not sure really draws much attention away from Marquette. There are a few D1 basketball fans in Milwaukee who, because they attended UWM, go to their games instead of Marquette's, but I doubt it would change attendance by much. It's a bit of an overcrowded sports market, in all honesty.
This is my opinion. There are many like it, but this one is mine.
