I didn't say anything about Iverson. No idea who started that.

TheHall wrote:Hey MUSeashells&Balloons I like how you are offering another insight to this question, because like FriarJ said it is COMPLETELY foreign to us die hard BE fans. I mean that honestly and respectfully. On one angel it really isn't about the die fans "devaluing" the regular season because damn near every sport "prioritizes" the playoffs over the regular season and the BET is the conference playoffs. It's win or go home for the championship. I see the reg season more as an important stepping stone to having a great season ie...don't play on the first day of the BET, finish above .500 in the BE, make the NCAA, win the regular season title, play in the finals of the BET, win the BET, Make the sweet 16, etc.

I also think you might be wrong when you spoke about Iverson earlier. He definitely would have said that about th BET. On many occasions later in life Iverson has mentioned how much it still hurts losing to Ray Allen & Uconn in the finals of the BET.

Everything FriarJ siad about the importance of the BET is true, whether it remains true has a lot to do with the future of the BE as "specal" conference which it has been since its inception. Tell me this, if most of us East Coasters said we don't really care if Marquette beats Wisconsin when they play? It's just another game, don't worry just as long as you keep winning 20+ games/year.

Thanks Hall! I have enjoyed having you on the site since you came on you always have a lot to add.

First I have made no comments about Iverson I think maybe you are confusing/combining me and MUBoxer

For better or worse I simply value a BET champion and a BE regular season champion equally.

Also not exactly sure what your asking about with the MU-UW game. But sometimes Im not sure I care that much its really not that important of a game to me. Its a non-confrence game and is frequently one of the better ones we play but it ranks low on the list of rivalries in my book. Though not quite as low as our 36-0 series "rivalry" with UW-M.

So please east coasters don't bother caring about our UW game!! I care far more about our games with you guys than UW!

Thanks and awesome post. As long as you guys keep owning the state on the recruiting trail I'll be happy!

Sidenote- It should be said that Marquette really came through for the BE. The only way this whole BE 2.0 thing even gets a shot is that someone else along with gtown had to bring current legitimacy to the C7. The rest of us brought tradition, but, you guys answered the call when none of the rest of us were able to on current legitimacy. Face it last season you guys winning a share of the "regular" season title :P & making the elite 8 was clutch for the c7 & eventually the BE 2.0. Now we all get a chance to step up & if you look at recruiting we are. The last version of the BE wouldn't have collasped if cuse, pitt, or ru would have stepped up in fb after miami & vt left, like you guys did after those same guys announced they were leaving.

For Xavier:

1) Sweet 16 again, before last year it had been 4 out of the past 5 years - NCAA Tournament success is obviously the most important thing to everyone, so that one needs no explanation.

2) Semaj gets drafted top 10 - Semaj going in the top 10 I think would be huge for Xavier (and by association the Big East) in showing that we can develop players and place them in the league. Would also mean that there was probably a lot of team success and individual accolades.

3) BE Tournament Champions - Prior to reading this thread I was always under the opinion that the regular season champion was way more important. I think it does kind of change with conference though. Being in the Atlantic 10, Xavier was always good enough that if they won the regular season they were safely in the NCAA Tournament. Then it was just about staying healthy because there was no prestige to winning the A10 Tournament and it would take a potential tourney spot from another A10 team.

4) Everything else (beating rivals, BE regular season title, individual player success and recognition, etc.)

Apparently BE coaches have similar priorities. Here's Lavs talking with Zags:

"For us it’s about the next step. It’s about making the NCAA Tournament and winning the BIG EAST Conference Tournament, it’s why we all came here. It’s always the same goals every year but this year we’re in position to do something special and that’s what we’re working towards every day."

http://zagsblog.com/articles/lavin-says-st-johns-goal-is-to-win-big-east-tournament/

Check the entire article too, there's no mention of a "regular" season title/championship. Like its been said before, it doesn't have to make sense, you don't have to like it, it's not a knock to the regular season, however it is the essence of BE bball. Can't wait to get to MSG for the BET next year!

I'd value the BE tourney title over the regular season...
