Chicago tavern style is just St. Louis style with real cheese. But if you like a nice crisp crust on a real pizza, I highly recommend a jersey style bar pie.

Had the pleasure of both styles... many times. My personal favorites are the thin crust, coal fired ovens.. Pepe's, Salley's and Modern in CT or John's in NY... life changing.

I don't know which came first Tavern or St Louis but Provel was trademarked in 1947 and Vito & nicks has been doing tavern style since at least 46 so I think you might have got your order of which imitates which wrong. But for the record St Louis style is the most disgusting thing I've ever eaten. Wasted, at 3am, still couldn't stomach more than a slice and went to get fast food instead.

I've never been to NJ and don't know of a spot in the Chicagoland or Milwaukeeland area for me to try it sadly but I'll take your word for it and if I ever make it out there I'll give it a shot.

My favorite pizza place in milwaukee is Ian's. There are 2 locations in the city. It was my favorite spot to hit after bar close.

I was just commenting on similarities (cracker thin crust and mutilating it into tiny squares) not trying to claim Chicago copycatted St. Louis (I don't know nor do I particularly care). I do agree that St. Louis style is disgusting - the provel cheese just ruins it.

Only tourists eat deep dish. Tavern style, square cut sausage all day. How he missed Beef with hot Giardiniera is beyond me. Or Harold's with mild sauce. And that's just the regular stuff. Only Chicago and New York have Michelin starred restaurants. So yeah, high end food or low, Chicago at the bottom of the list is stupid. Bet it got you clicks though.

DC should be the half-smoke. Or any one of the Ethiopian joints near Howard. There aren't any good crab shacks until you get to Annapolis.

Omaha with Runza makes sense? All the old school italian steak houses closed, otherwise I'd pick those. Or a casserole. Nebraskans love their damn casserole. If you really want dinner and a show though, check out the Alpine Inn. Your mind will be blown.
