I'd be genuinely curious to know what the books look like for the Butler and Georgetown football teams when tuition paid by the athletes is taken into account. I honestly don't know whether they'd be one of the biggest money losers in the department or surprisingly neutral.

It was a good decision to have event cancellation, particularly given the importance of the tournament revenue to the league. But just as important has having the coverage is understanding the terms and following those terms so that the league could collect on the policy.

People critical of Val for this now know there was a good reason...

I’ve got a good friend who works in admissions at a private university. He has said many times that schools like his use the Olympic sports and partial scholarship sports simply as an admission tool.

Parents and kids like the ego boost of being a “scholarship athlete” after they’ve spent god knows how much time and money on youth travel sports. So a D3 or NAIA school wants to attract a kid who is willing to pay 90% of the tuition for the 10% athletic scholarship. Think about how many students end up enrolling using that model and how many schools would suffer massive enrollment declines if they didn’t offer those sports.

SI article. A good read. But check out the charts, in particular, in the article. Very insightful, and eye popping.

Thank you for sharing that. What a fantastic look at the state of affairs and the potentially huge impact not having football would inflict upon much of college athletics.

Furman dropping baseball and lacrosse. The dominoes are beginning to fall across the college sports landscape and I hope that none of your school's favorite programs fall with them.

Dana O'Neil tweeted that Central Michigan's total expenses for track was $241,794. The school's football expenses were $3.8 million. And they cut track.

I wonder how long before the "non-power" football conf schools rethink football and the benefits vs. costs.

It's probably a little more complicated than a simple spreadsheet. I know for a lot of schools sports like football spur alumni giving. Any good administration is going to know (or should) the total economic impact of each of their programs--whether it be athletic, academic or social. In Central Michigan's case I'd be interested in seeing the impact of a successful football season has on alum controbutions.
