Val Ackerman Press Conference

All the below quotes are courtesy of John Fanta on Twitter. Lots of good information here from Val.

“The Big East has been through a lot in its 41 years. I don’t even think Dave Gavitt could have come to grips that this would happen.” “When sports come back, they’re going to come back big.”

“If our campuses are not open, we will not have athletes coming back.”

Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman says the timeline for understanding fall semester / schools opening / sports returning could be late June / early July.

Val Ackerman notes that the Big East did have insurance for the conference tournament cancellation at Madison Square Garden. The pandemic is considered under the insurance umbrella.

Val Ackerman has described the future of college athletics as a “make it up as you go” playbook and “patchwork.” This sums up the level of unknown that is still out there with the pandemic, and the status of college sports returning this fall. There’s a high level of unknown.

Val Ackerman has announced that there will be alternative programming for the annual Big East Mental Health Forum for conference student-athletes this summer.

Think about the school locations of the 11 Big East schools. St. John’s and Seton Hall are in a totally different predicament than Creighton and Xavier. Staggered scheduling is a likely possibility, and it creates a complicated scenario. A lot of work to be done.

Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman says the formal vote for Name/Image/Likeness for college athletes is planned for January 2021 to be put into effect for 21-22 academic year.

Val Ackerman says the Big East is just looking at alternative schedules for the FALL right now. Basketball hasn’t been looked at in terms of alternative scheduling models.

“The NCAA is also looking hard at possible disruption (with national fall championships).” - Val Ackerman

Thanks for starting a new thread. I was going to do the same as it seems like there is a lot of stuff to discuss here. Where to start? Maybe here;

“If our campuses are not open, we will not have athletes coming back.”

Have any schools - particularly those in areas hit hard by Covid - make any statements about students returning to campus?
Nebraska by birth, Creighton by choice.

Staggered starts gets my attention. Does that mean different league schools would play at different times of the season? What if the NYC area just gets worse and it is decided that St. John’s and Hall will only do remote learning for the entire year. Could the other 9 schools still play?

Yes, it definitely sounds like the Big East would play with whichever institutions are able and without those which are not.

just saw this-
“Any school that’s lucky enough to be back in business should allow their athletes to resume activities.” - Val Ackerman, who has continued to reference staggered fall schedules. If one campus is closed, it shouldn’t stop others who are open from potentially playing.

FWIW, UConn's president stated in an email to students "our goal is to fully resume operations in the fall, and we are planning for this. However, if public health circumstances do not allow for this or if the state or the university are unable to meet the criteria for reopening...a more limited or scaled-back opening would be pursued."

Same message from Xavier today - resume this fall if the coast is deemed clear.

The following announcements were shared with students this week. Xavier is committed to sharing timely information with parents

Planning for the Fall Semester

Read a message from Father Graham on planning for the fall semester:

After much consultation with Xavier’s COVID-19 Task Force, the President’s Direct Reports, and a wide variety of other Xavier faculty and administrators, Xavier University will work toward the re-opening of our campus and returning to in-class instruction for the fall 2020 semester. (All summer courses will remain as remote learning.) Of course, we continue to follow the advice of the CDC and the Ohio governor’s office, as well as our partners at TriHealth who have ably advised Xavier on health and wellness issues. The Task Force and working groups of University constituents are working on scenario plans for Xavier to best respond to a variety of circumstances. Xavier is already putting additional safety protocols in place and will continue to adapt as regulations dictate. As part of the Xavier experience, we are blessed to have small class sizes and already have a reputation for our practical ability to care for each student and for our whole community. We are committed to maintaining a safe learning, living and working environment for all those engaged with Xavier. We look forward to seeing our students again in the fall.

Massachusetts is third in cases/deaths behind NY and NJ and the Northeastern University president said the school "intends" to open for on-campus classes this fall. https://www.boston.com/news/education/2020/05/08/northeastern-university-fall-2020

Also, Emmert stated yesterday that there won't be college sports unless students are allowed back on camps. https://nypost.com/2020/05/09/ncaa-no-college-sports-until-students-are-back-on-campus/
