Though it's not really comparable due to the difference in quantities (1:1 versus 1:4), I can't imagine someone not affiliated with Xavier telling Xavier that they should think about making material changes when it comes to UC and the Crosstown Shootout.

I get the arguments for modern day NCAA BBall realities, but still.

Beyond that, when it comes to the Big 5, I direct my focus to St. Joe's. I cannot believe how far that program has fallen. Their incredible strategic blunder to sink $15mm into a basketball gym virtually locked them into mid-major, no-growth status for the duration. What appears to have once been Nova's biggest rival in that group is now a shell of its former self from when we knew them well in the A10.

As far as LaSalle goes, I've never had any respect for that program. They simply refused to pump the necessary funding into that program in order to attempt to keep up. LaSalle, notwithstanding a good year or so here and there ("good" being defined in the eye of the beholder), has been a boat anchor on its fellow conference mates.

Penn and Temple? No problem. I get playing them season in and season out.

Is St. Joe's or Temple a bigger rival? i would've assumed temple

For older alums (maybe classes of mid-80s and earlier), SJU is definitely a bigger rival. At the time, the schools had similar profiles and pulled from exactly the same Philadelphia and suburban Catholic high schools. As Villanova became more national, a lot of that animosity faded. SJU still hates Villanova, but there isn't much heat in the other direction.

Villanova-Temple has a lot of good things going for it from a rivalry perspective. Public vs. private, "rich kids" vs city kids, etc. Chaney and Mass hated each other way back when. TU appears to be on the upswing under Mckie, and is playing a appealing brand of bully ball. That game should be a war.

I love the Big 5. I wish NYC had tradition like that—something to play for. If our NCSOS, according to Kenpom, is going to continue to be in the ballpark of 330/353 last year and currently 342/353 this year, I’d much rather play a 5 Boroughs-type schedule with Fordham, Columbia, St. Francis, and Wagner (possibly Hofstra for Long Island) than watch teams like Mercer & Central Connecticut State. Perhaps it’d generate more interest for the program and the city. We should be selling out Carnesecca like Villanova does with Finneran.

You Eastern city slickers can boast about your shedules and tend to your little gardens all you want. Out here on the vast expanses of the western frontier, the Great Plains, we shall shoulder on. Building the great nation that most of you “fly over”. Routing wagon trains, building transcontinental freight railroad lines, shipping cows and grains, selling insurance, etc., etc., etc. ;)

Lil Creighton will probably drop 2-3 of the +300 MEAC/SWAC/WAC teams and add Omaha (UNO) and possibly one or two of Concordia College, Bellevue University, Iowa St, Northern Iowa (Ali Farroukmanesh), or the College of St Marys (women) to round out our future schedules. None of the locals are any worse than the MEAC/SWAC teams and are less expensive. So have your little garden parties, but know that those of us on the western frontier are not to be underestimated.

I feel a little bad for La Salle. They literally have no money to pump into their school, let alone the basketball program. A few years ago they had to sell their historic art collection to pay for campus construction. That's a school that is in danger of going under. Basketball is and should be on the back-burner.
This is my opinion. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

Catch 22 because a successful basketball program can increase publicity and drive admissions.

How do you guys think the Big East is going to set up the 20 game schedule once UConn starts next year? I know the ACC had their conference openers be conference games with a 20 game schedule. The Big Ten had games in early December I believe. I would prefer that model.
