The issue it doesn't solve is how do you convince one of the "game 2" teams to give up a Big East home game for it? Maybe UConn or Seton Hall would do it if you can guarantee enough tickets to cover their STH base and a regular home game worth of revenue - but SJU season ticket holders are going to want to be taken care of as well - and even if they get a ticket it likely won't be in their regular seats. Also, the SJU fans in the building (if they hang around for game 2) would likely root against them (especially against SHU) so they certainly wouldn't get a home crowd in that arrangement.

Yep, would have to be a single ticket event since that's how MSG always does these double headers. I'm thinking 6:30 PM and 9:00 PM on opening night, aired on FS1. And yes I was thinking about what you said regarding a team giving up a home game. That could be a problem, but maybe have the same 2 teams come back 2 years in a row and then alternate with new teams in the years following.

As for St. John's, let's say for instance if we play a mid-western team that typically plays at CA. We could get half the revenue for the night (or even more), and the other half is split between the game 2 teams. St. John's probably benefits overall since we'd be converting a low exposure CA game into a high exposure MSG game.

As for St. John's fans rooting against a game 2 team- I think for game 2 it'd need to be either A. midwest team vs midwest or B. northeast vs northeast. Say game 2 is UConn vs Seton Hall... or Georgetown vs Villanova. St. John's fans wouldn't overwhelmingly root for/against any of those teams, and they'd likely be offset anyways by the fans of UConn/Hall/Georgetown/Nova who'd be a lot more vocal.

I agree there are certainly legitimate issues, but I do think they're all solvable and the event could have a very positive benefit for the conference overall.

At the very least, I'd like to see something like this:
2 games on opening night, aired/promoted on FS1 back to back. Only difference is one game is played at MSG rather than both.
1. St. John's home game at MSG against a team like Nova, Georgetown, UConn, Hall, etc. NOT a double header and just a regular home game. Promote this as the opening game of the 20-21 Big East season.
2. Any other 2 Big East teams, preferably with at least one of them being a ranked team. Just a regular Big East game played in early November, but an exciting match up that people would want to tune in to.

1. When the Gavitt games are up, we need to make a serious push to get a scheduling agreement with the ACC. If memory serves me right, the Big 10/ACC challenge replaced the old Big East/ACC games. Need to bring that back. Would be great for the conference and college basketball. Syracuse and BC should always be playing one of: UConn, Nova, G’town, SJU, Hall, PC every year. Not to mention a 40 yr anniversary Carolina-G’town matchup with Ewing and Jordan present. Hell they should schedule that anyway if they haven’t.

The last pre-split Big East Challenge was with the SEC. I think the Gavitt games make a lot more sense than the ACC given the current set-up of the Big East. Renewing it would be my preference.

My preferences, in order:
1. B1G
1a. ACC
3. BXII
4. SEC
5. P12

We already have 2 of my top 3 preferences, so I'm very happy with the setup. SEC and especially P12 just don't make sense geographically.

I have a feeling 1 of our 2 challenges will be renewed, and the other won't be but may be replaced with an ACC challenge. Personally I feel they have more exciting matchups for our Northeast teams, but less exciting for our Midwest teams.

I certainly love the idea of doing a regular season MSG event, but the challenges all seem to revolve around making them conference games. I'd like to see something like "Big East vs Old Big East" challenge - perhaps a pair of double headers featuring local Big East teams vs football sellouts. And play it on the BET floor lol

Game 1: St. John's vs Rutgers
(Giving them to SJU since SHU already had a series with them)
Game 2: Villanova vs Pitt
Game 3: Seton Hall vs ...idk? Louisville or Notre Dame? There's not really another geographically obvious one
Game 4: Uconn vs Syracuse (the nightcap so we don't have to worry about all of your OTs screwing up the rest of the schedule)

Though I'll file this one away with another one I'd like to see that'll never happen (an exempt tourney at MSG featuring all NY and NJ teams - SHU, SJU, RU, Cuse, Princeton, Iona...maybe Monmouth and Stony Brook?). Or the all NJ one at the Prudential Center that would also never happen.

Hall- yes the old BE vs new BE idea has been floated around here for a while. I like the idea, but figured the Big East might want to have some conference games at the beginning of the season now. My first idea was St. John's vs Syracuse (old BE) followed by a neutral game between 2 other Big East teams just to get one of those extra conference games out of the way. That might be the best case scenario if it's feasible. Count it as a St. John's home game and give them at least half the revenue. Rest of the revenue gets split between the other 2 Big East teams. Have those 2 teams (in game 2) come back the following year, that way they can alternate home and away with the 2 years of neutral games.

As for a big NY/NJ type tournament, as awesome as that'd be unfortunately there's no chance it'd happen (as you stated). A 4 team tipoff tournament featuring exclusively NE teams (or old/new BE teams) could happen, but one big problem with that is you wouldn't want more than 1 BE team in the tournament. If there are 2+ then they could face each other in the finals. Maybe have game 1 be BE vs BE (count as neutral game), game 2 be old BE vs old BE... then finals would be BE vs old BE.

Why would we allow the teams which killed the Big East access to the Garden, our crown jewel? Those teams are hurting because of their lack of northeastern exposure, even with their 30 pieces of silver football money. I'll consider pissing on them if they're on fire, but other than that let them play down on tobacco road.

Even more, why highlight the old big east vs. "new"? We're the Big East. We're doing fine, no need to sit around and mull about the old girlfriend.

And, leave our Big 5 alone. It's a Philly thing; if you don't get it, that's your problem. We'll figure it out.

Ya, I'm ok with permanently locking Cuse/Pitt out of the Garden. After all, Bumheim did say he doesn't have the availability to continue scheduling UCONN...

There's literally nothing preventing any of them from scheduling games at the Garden...

I say close the door on any ACC talk but try and get Notre Dame to schedule at least two BE teams each year. And Miami, easy ACC win and a nice warm winter vacay

True, but this kinda event in Charlotte seems more appropriate for them these days.

I believe the conference challenges are highly influenced by television partners. The SEC and ACC are currently subsidiaries of the evil empire and therefore are probably not viable for conference challenges. I am happy with the Big Ten and Big 12 challenges.
