Memphis playing Wiseman after NCAA declares him ineligible

Postby Omaha1 » Sat Nov 09, 2019 8:29 am

It looks pretty obvious that Hardaway provided impermissible benefits to possible NBA #1 pick James Wiseman, but Memphis decided to play him last night anyway. Wow.

This is going to get interesting.

Saw Bilas on ESPN this morning saying that even though Memphis got a temporary restraining order allowing him to play that the ncaa has a bylaw that says if you play someone they say is ineligible even after getting a TRO, they can drop the hammer and make the team ineligible for postseason. Bilas made it sound like he wouldn’t be playing Wiseman if he was in charge.

$11,500? High major coaches make that in a day. And thats no joke. Lets say the average high major coach is making around 2 million (also what NCAA president Mark Emmert makes). Based on a 2000 hour work year (which of course they work nothing near that), they make $1,000 dollars per...hour.

Wake me up when the NCAA is dead.

This isn't about paying players though. This is about a booster (Penny) paying a kid and his family 12,000 bucks to move to memphis. Recruiting violations like that will still be illegal.

Not sure he'll end up being ineligible unless the NCAA can prove penny made those payments with the intent of getting him to come to memphis and I would bet on the NCAA not being able to prove that.

Potatoe potato, the NCAA is asking for this shit to happen by restricting every other Avenue for players to benefit.

They don’t have to prove anything do they? It’s not the legal system. They can declare whatever they want.

They have to prove it broke NCAA rules. If they could declare whatever they wanted Bill Self wouldn't be coaching at Kansas. Right now they are saying wiseman is "likely ineligible". i think they have to prove penny intended to influence wiseman to memphis with the payment, but don't quote me

No they don't have to prove that. Penny was a booster for Memphis and gave an impermissible benefit to a recruit. Doesn't matter intent. A booster paid a potential recruit. End of story. And Memphis already admitted it happened.
