Interesting observation:

Big East has five black basketball coaches out of 10. The so-called Power Five? Nine out of 65.

Obviously.

But seriously I don't get it. Howard wins POY at end of last season then there's only two logical routes to vote for someone else for Preseason this year either A) you're admitting you think you got it wrong at the end of last year. Or B) you're saying Howard's peaked and Powell hasn't. If you don't fall into those categories then there's no logic behind it and you're a lunatic. I wish they'd ask some coaches a bit about why they voted for whom they did.

I really like both Howard and Powell (well, as much as an opposing fan could) but another logical conclusion is that they think Powell will be the player of the year this year. Just because Howard won it last year doesn't mean anything for this year, does it? Isn't that what this preseason voting silliness is all about? How the coaches predict this season will go? If that's the case, I'd vote for Powell, too, because I think SHU will be better than Marquette and Powell will be a huge reason why they have success. Based on the coaches predictions for how teams will fare in the conference this year, I think it's very logical to believe that was the thinking of those who voted for Powell.

Obviously...lunatic ass coaches. Jays picked 7th? 7th? Picked us 9th last year. CU has finished 3rd (ties) the last 3 years.
I've got them 3rd again (solo) this season. Coaches are rather dense...X in 3rd. Xavier? Really? Prov in 5th, Hoyers in 6th? Not even happening.
Coaches have been watching too much Netflix and reading the HLOH "Nova still on top" thread. No sane person picks X as 3rd in the conference. :o ;)

Jays finish 3rd, or better this season.

Spend your energy making your case vs Nova or maybe MU....but to go aggressively negative towards X makes you the "lunatic ass"...we are deep and very experienced.

I'm thinking Butler may sweep you guys....same kinda team just more size. Not to mention Baldwin much better than Alexander. McD better than Ballock.

The coaches don't include their own team in their ranking so there are only 9 first place votes. Seton Hall received 5, Nova 4. No one voted Nova 3rd. By math, they were 1/2 on all ballots.

It is very possible you don't know what you're talking about. The poll I saw shows both teams getting FIVE 1st place votes. I think the standard is that you can't vote your team 1st BUT I'm sure someone here can clarify.

If there's no games between then and now then you need to ask why?

Think of it as a logic statement IF _______ THEN Powell is POY so what did the coaches fill in the blank to cast their votes. That's what I'm curious about and those two options I posited are the only two options I can think of.

Just speculation as I have no inside info on the coaches/voters thought process, but I would guess:

Powell had a stronger/much more consistent finish to last season - gaining quickly on Howard to the point where he was considered to have some shot at the POY award after Howard was considered a lock for most of the year.

Ultimately, Howard still had the better overall body of work last year and got the award. For this year's Preseason POY, voters who chose Powell likely did so projecting that Powell's late season trajectory would continue to the point of overtaking Howard.

In any case, preseason awards mean nothing. It'll be fun watching these 2 great players battle to lead their teams to meaningful awards and likely give us a great POY race in the process.

Personal opinion, but my guess is that the coaches were at least slightly influenced by the fact that Hall is projected to be a better team than Marquette this year. I know it isn't supposed to come into the decision, but human nature is hard to ignore. I think both players have a great shot at it and look forward to watching them both. I do think that we have a really good chance to be better than people are expecting this year.
This is my opinion. There are many like it, but this one is mine.
