Should Big East Follow California's "Fair Pay For Play"?

Postby billyjack » Mon Sep 30, 2019 11:12 am

I don't have time to go deep into this right now, but do you think the Big East should follow California's lead, and allow our athletes to earn money from endorsements, etc?

Not sure how the NCAA will react, but I think we're in a unique position where this would be a great idea for our conference.

I'd rather hitch our wagon to (in my opinion) a forward thinking idea, instead of staying close to the dimwits running the NCAA.

So is the NCAA going to prohibit athletes from competing if they take $$? That's the rule currently in place and until that changes, I would keep the Big East out of it.

Right, the NCAA wants to continue to not allow athletes to make money from endorsements, or i guess sports camps, etc.

Maybe I’m just old fashioned but I’m not a fan of this.

I’m not a fan. In theory it sounds like a good idea but I don’t think it’s good in practice.

Rep. Mark Walker, R-N.C., has proposed a change to federal tax code that would force the NCAA to choose between giving athletes the rights to their name, image and likeness or risk losing their tax-exempt nonprofit status.

NCAA would rather allow athletes receive payments than lose tax exempt status, I'm sure.

The California law only applies to schools in California. It is a state law. Until such time as NY passes a similar law, the BE has no legs to stand on regarding such actions.. Besides we have teams in several states, so unless the Feds pass Pay to Play legislation there will be no legal avenue for multistate leagues to pursue. Even the Pac-12 will have problems with the California law.

I don't think there is a single Big East school that would voluntarily sign up to never compete in the NCAA tournament again. So no, the Big East should not follow California. When everything is settled in court we can maybe revisit.
This is my opinion. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

Federal and state laws have little to do with it. There's nothing illegal with paying a player for an endorsement. It's just against NCAA rules. This California law will put the NCAA to the test. Hopefully the Big East schools are prepared to go full bore with it if the NCAA allows the Cali schools to do it without consequence.
