Lifelong Xavier fan here with a few thoughts.
1) Nova is the top dog of the conference until proven otherwise. I’ll consider it proven when they go two years with out a regular season title, tournament title, or a final four. They have a great system, top talent and a top 10 coach (personally I think Wright is top 3 but reasonable arguments could be made for more than three coaches being better
2) Nova owns X. As an X fan it feels like our record is worst than 2-12 against you. Most of the losses have been blow outs. Last year we were at least competitive in the two losses so maybe Nova just owned Mack. Time will tell if Steele can right the ship against nova.
3)Xavier is not used to getting pushed around in conference. Xavier was the flagship of the MCC and then the A10. So it’s tough for you to admit that we are not the top of the heap in conference. Some of the more juvenile fans are acting like a little brother here. In fact they are acting like my little brother who went to Dayton. That’s not a good look guys, let’s try to be a little classier. At the very least maybe don’t post after knocking back a few too many at Dana Gardens.
4) Most of the Big East has a better history then us. For a Muskie fans that started to go to games in schmidt fieldhouse it’s been a hell of a ride! My favorite moment in X history is when Tyrone Hill and Derrick Strong neutralized Dikembi Mutumbo and Alonzo Morning to beat the mighty Hoyas. That was an ultimate little engine that could moment for X. To go from that game to now being in the same conference has been amazing to witness. It seems like X never takes a step back when they get a new coach and more often then not takes a step forward. Hopefully that trend continues under Steele
5) The league is deep this year, so this will be one of if not the toughest year for Nova to win a regular season or tournament championship. I still wouldn’t bet against them winning a championship this year. For me it’s really thought to rank the top seven teams in conference, and I wouldn’t be surprised if anyone of them won either championship.
6) One of the things that has been tough for me to understand is why the traditional Big East Schools don’t care about regular season championships. Don’t get me wrong the Big East tournament is the greatest sporting event I’ve ever been to. I understand the pride in winning the conference tourney. But what’s wrong with having pride in winning the regular season in a double round robin league?
7) Like a fan of any teams I’m clearly bias and suffer from delusions as to how good X can be this year. If everyone comes together, X could win the Big East and make some serious noise in the tournament. They could also be back in the NIT, reality will likely be somewhere in between. Either way I look forward to another season of great basketball.
8) As a psa to my fellow Muskie fans, the book store has running man logo hats this year. I was never so excited to buy a hat before, hopefully the book store will continue to stick new running man logo gear
