UConn Fee Could End Up North of $15M

Whispers around Divorce Resort Tuesday were that the fee could end up north of $15 million, and that the AAC has leverage in that a 2020 departure would actually be leaving two years early, not one. Twenty-seven months from July 1 would be Oct. 1, 2021, taking the AAC/UConn affiliation through 2021-22. No one wants to stick it out that long, though. Couples don’t break up and share the same dwelling for years to come, you know.

I don't see it being that high. Probably $12/13M.

At probably upwards of $1k per hour, UCONN's attorneys had better get it knocked down.

I doubt it gets over $15 million.

Syracuse and Pittsburgh paid $7.5 million to leave the Big East in 2011; West Virginia paid $11 milllion (Big 12 paid $9 million); Louisville paid $11 million; Rutgers paid $11.5 million. Ultimately, a clean break is best for both parties (not unlike the C7/FB schools in 2012). The longer the two parties stay together, the worse it becomes for both sides. In this case, UConn can use this to its advantage: Aresco has already said that UConn Football will not be able to remain as a FB-only member and that football will actually be stronger without them in the league; UConn could leverage that by choosing to stay in the league for the full 27 months (and simply paying the $10 million) - however, that still hurts the football side. Ultimately, it would be a poor look for the league if UConn Basketball makes a deep run under their banner (as them leaving will only do damage to their P6 branding). Let's face it, UConn is still very much associated with the Big East, so any success they accumulate will ultimately be reflected towards that conference (and not the AAC).

I still see ~$12 million separation agreement for both sides for UConn to join on July 1st, 2020. It's fair and amicable for both sides. If they choose to stay in the league another year, that figure should obviously go down.

Heck, Aresco could still spin that as a huge win for the AAC, since that figure gives an extra million to each member; maybe another extension for him would be in order?

UCONN seems to have several bad relationships with former alums, Aresco, Ollie, even the great Ray Allen! What gives?

If they can't come to terms, UCONN leaving the AAC on Oct 1, 2021, during the middle of the college football season would be comical.

I don't know the specifics but it sounded like Ray Allen jumped into the lawsuit that Ollie has with the university

Ollie brought him into the lawsuit to begin with. Ray should be mad at him.

Aresco and Ollie can eat dirt.

So it’s $10M just to leave regardless of the date? And possibly a couple million more to leave sooner? Just pay whatever they want and get out.

Ollie, the handpicked heir of Calhoun, by Calhoun...now the bastard child of the faithful. What drama, what entertainment! Luvin' it. Go Ollie!
