2020 Recruiting Class- THE BEST EVER!!!

Postby adoraz » Tue Jul 16, 2019 1:16 am

It's time again for our annual 247 Composite recruiting thread. For those new to the forum, the thread title is meant to annoy a couple of our resident trolls who always try to turn these threads into **** shows. It's been rough for them these past few years, and with UConn added they're going to have an even tougher time going forward.

First, let's quickly recap our excellent 2019 class:

https://247sports.com/Season/2019-Baske ... highschool
https://247sports.com/Season/2019-Baske ... e=Big-east

2019 Top 100 Rankings via 247 Composite:
#15 Nova (Jeremiah Robinson-Earl)
#16 Nova (Bryan Antoine)
#55 Nova (Justin Moore)
#60 DePaul (Romeo Weems)
#63 UConn (James Bouknight)
#64 Providence (Greg Gantt)
#68 Nova (Eric Dixon)
#72 Marquette (Symir Torrence)
#87 Xavier (KyKy Tandy)
#89 UConn (Akok Akok)
#94 Butler (Khalif Battle)
#100 UConn (Jalen Gaffney)

That's 12/100 spots. 7/11 Big East teams got a top 100 recruit this year. Doing some math:

There are 76 Power 6 teams. Add another ~14 to account for major recruiting powers from other conferences like Memphis, Gonzaga, Cincy, etc... and we're up to 90 power teams.

The Big East's 11 members make up 12% of all power teams (11/90) and recruited 12% of the top 100 recruits (12/100).

In other words, the Big East is right there with the rest of the power conferences. No difference whatsoever.

Now for 2020...

https://247sports.com/Season/2020-Baske ... HighSchool

2020 is still extremely early, with only 22 of the top 100 recruits committing. Of those 22 recruits, 2 have committed to Big East schools:
#60 Xavier (Dwon Odom)
#91 Xavier (C.J. Wilcher)

Xavier currently has the #5 class and Butler #11 (includes #131 Chuck Harris).

Big East teams seem to be leading a lot of the crystal ball picks, so let's hope for more commitments soon!

Xavier is in a good spot with a bunch of top 100 and four star guys. I think we'll add two more to the class before it's said and done. It could end up being a legit top ten class if we get our two main targets. Dwon Odom looks like the real deal. I think he's still underrated at 60. His AAU squad just won the Adidas Gauntlet this past weekend.

I see a bunch of Seton Hall and Marquette crystal balls in the top 100. Hope they can close on those guys. Georgetown has one as well with Terrance Williams. Villanova won't need many guys this year, so having schools like seton hall and georgetown reel in big time talent would be huge.

Not only is Odom underrated when it comes to 247 composite....but for some reason, he has received very few accolades for his recent accomplishments.

He just killed it at the talent heavy AGSC. As the leading scorer on the Championship team he posting 20 pts in the final AND finished top 10 in scoring for the entire event but was not an All Tourney selection?

In the second most recent major event for 2020 recruits, he finished 3RD in scoring at the prestigious NBPA TOP100, and was barely mentioned in the press coverage I saw. If he was a Duke or UK commit it would be a different story entirely.

His AAU career comes to an end starting Thursday at the Adidas Gauntlet Finale. Expect him and the Celtics to stay hot. Then comes his last HS season in which, again, he will completely dominate.....best pure PG in the class when all said and done.

90 is a little high, but yeah recruiting has been "power 6" + a handful of schools outside of it on top.

Don't expect too much Nova contribution for 2020. We have no seniors, no guaranteed oad, and an incoming transfer that year. I think we'll end up with a one player class without multiple players transferring out.

I think 90 (P6+14) is actually a bit conservative on a year to year basis, given that this year there are:
6 AAC players
4 WCC
2 A10
1 Ivy
3 Undecided

That adds up to 16 players, which is more than every conference but 2. Send those 16 players to a made up 14 team conference and they'd have arguably the best class, especially since they'd have the #1 recruit in the country.

Are there 14 teams worthy of being power teams? Not really. But are there 14 teams (equivalent to 1 conference) that eat up the remaining recruits the P6 doesn't get to each year? Absolutely. The teams may change a tiny bit each year, but you'd always be able to find 14 non P6 teams that recruit equivalent to how the power conferences recruit. Last year for instance, we would have swapped UMass and Harvard (who got top 100 recruits this year) for teams that recruited very well in 2018 like WKU and Nevada.

3 undecideds are going pro, and Memphis and Gonzaga account for 9 of remaining 13 players. The number was smaller last year, too. But I see where your approximation approach is coming from.

As long as those 3 undecideds aren't going to P5 teams, then it's all the same. For example, take the original equation and change it from 100 to 97:

The Big East's 11 members make up 12.2% of all power teams (11/90) and recruited 12.37% of the top 100 recruits (12/97).

Forget about all that though, let's look at it this way:

2019 Top 100 Players Per Team (Players/Conference Teams):
1. ACC: 20/15: 1.33
2. SEC: 18/14: 1.29
3. Big 12: 11/10: 1.10
4. Big East: 12/11: 1.09
5. Pac 12: 13/12: 1.08
6. Big Ten: 10/14: 0.71
7. AAC: 6/11: 0.55
8. WCC: 4/10: 0.40
9. A10: 2/14: 0.14
10. Ivy: 1/8: 0.13
Undecided: 3

We have nearly a 3 way tie for third place. The Big East is double the first non-P6 team (AAC).

Anyways, I think we're on the same page here. Just wanted to prove that the Big East has recruited just as well as the average power conference.

Side note: UConn moving from Big East to AAC had a massive impact on these rankings. Big East and AAC both would have had 9 recruits (slight advantage for Big East with 10 teams vs 12). Now the Big East has twice as many.

I think this will be a down year in recruiting, Nova and Xavier have lead the league, it looks like Nova won't get many recruits this year leaving Xavier to carry the flag. Don't see Georgetown or Seton Hall pulling in multiple top 100 4 stars like X.

Went through the 24/7 rankings and I gotta say it's not as bad as I thought. I was surprised to see Georgetown on several guys lists, Ewing is doing a good job recruiting players in the 50-100 range. Also saw alot of X no surprise there. Saw a couple Seton Halls and Marquettes, would be great to see Seton Hall land those guys, also Providence as well. Also saw Dayton on 2 guys Crystal balls lol.
