Athens is a beautiful place to be on Saturdays in the fall. I don't go up for games much anymore (it's a solid 4 hour drive) but if you love college football and have never been to an SEC game, I highly recommend doing it, particularly if you can get to Baton Rouge, Tuscaloosa, Athens, Oxford, Fayetteville, Columbia, Gainesville (or catch UGA/UF in Jacksonville)...pretty much any of them although i'd say I am not sure i'd go to a game at Miss State...those damn cow bells that they ring constantly would be incentive to not go in the stadium.

Great post.

I live in Jacksonville now. The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party is something to behold. It's like an in-season bowl game between conference rivals. An NFL stadium that has thousands of additional temporary seats built into it, then it is literally split right down the middle: 50/50 ticket distributions to FL and GA. Forget that the game takes place on Saturday. RV's start rolling in from all over the previous Monday to create a city close to the stadium. Parties every night. The parties on Friday night are legendary.

Otherwise, though I still have to knock it off the bucket list, a trip to Oxford for the Grove and an Ole Miss game is a must for a college football purist. It's been called "the Holy Grail of tailgating sites". As many as 100,000 fans pack the area. Most of the tents are set up by professional tailgate vendors and not the students or families themselves. Many tents are set up with fine kitchenware, with lots of lace and designer doilies, fine china, chandeliers, sterling silver or silver-plated candelabras, etc. Sunday best attire.

Finally, UGA is a riot - - the mascot, not the school. The Seiler's pamper that dog to no end. Although last year's meet and great with BEVO almost didn't turn out so well.

Oxford is a bucket list item...I've been to a number of SEC stadiums but not there yet. I have a buddy whose kid is a senior lineman at Miss State...may go to the Auburn game as it's the closest game to SAV this year. And I can't do cowbells.

UGA def gets pampered. I worked with Charles for 10 years or so and are still in the same industry here. Little known UGA fact (although it's prob all over the internet somewhere): UGA IX ("Russ") was the only one to have brown markings. All other UGA's were all white English bulldogs. Russ was the interim for 3 years (while they looked for an all white one in the blood line) and was finally christened UGA IX, ultimately because his brown markings were not visible due to his game day "outfit."

Didn't know that. Does that idiot still roll-up to Athens in a specially built Tahoe on gameday? It's funny to see him on TV early in the season, sitting on bags of ice in Sanford Stadium.

You are so right about the cowbells. We went to the Gator Bowl the year MSU played MIchigan (I think it was UM). My God. I can't believe those people do that to themselves. There is no way I would attend a home game at Miss. State.

Same. At least it's debatable that the NCAAT is in some ways more exciting than the NBA. NCAAF has nothing on the NFL.

To each it's own. A lot might have to do where one is from.
Yet, my vote is college football as the best sport! 12 plus hours on every Saturday. I don't even bother on Sunday. Snoozefest.

Boy, years ago when Tennessee was rolling. The opening up of the T, as the team comes out. Over/Under on Rocky Top.
