A few far-fetched possibilities:

1. A bunch of teams voluntarily give up fbs football.
2. A bunch of teams are forced to give up fbs football.
2. A bunch of rules change and a basketball-only conference is allowed, making it possible to add teams further west.

With UConn joining the Big East as a full member, VCU's candidacy strengthens, IMO. VCU being the only public institution in a conference dominated by private schools was always a long-shot - despite its overall strengths as a basketball program and athletic program. However, with UConn coming on board, I can definitely see the league (long-term) considering VCU to complement their membership and really solidifying its East coast presence. VCU is a national university (ranked similarly to St. John's), with a strong endowment ($1.8 billion) and high enrollment (over 30k, like UConn) and modern facilities (8k arena and new $25 million practice facility).

If/when the 20-game conference schedule disipates and/or the round-robin outlives in usefulness, I can envision a Big East years down the road that sees VCU as #12, Dayton as #13 and SLU as #14. Doing so would create a perfect East/West split in Olympic sports (not basketball) - which would help save money in travel for those programs, and allow the BE to expand into Tuesday for the BET at MSG (2 games Tuesday, 4 games Wednesday, 4 games Thursday, 2 games Friday and one game Saturday; moving to 14 would also allow for seven sessions for fans to purchase, when we have five at present).

East
Georgetown
Providence
Seton Hall
St. John's
UConn
VCU
Villanova

West
Butler
Creighton
Dayton
DePaul
Marquette
Saint Louis

No thanks on 14 teams or east/west divisions. There is no need to expand past 11 teams for one or two decades unless Kansas or Notre Dame become available. There is no benefit to adding mid major programs like VCU, SLU or UD - none.

I would think that how many more programs may added from here would be a function of media content valuation and what is perceived to be best for garnering NCAAT Units, not picking up a couple games for the BET and lightly reducing travel expenses.

So you have had very very good basketball success and because of it were invited in. But your time is done....it’s our time. This will be fun, I will check in all year and we will go head to head and see who is having the better year. If my posts get ya going how are you going to handle UD having a better BB team!

LOL, are you a teenager?

You Dayton fans aren't the brightest bunch. Dayton will never be a BE member. I'd personally take St. Louis and UMass first. Even take Boston U before Dayton. Accept what you are, a midmajor shithole

My pipe dream is to have UD, VCU and SLU and a few others start their own better version of the A-10 since it seems so difficult to kick out the bottom tier. I can see a BB dominant group of us that could give the BE some competition- and on the occasionally "up year" maybe even a peer conference for NCAAT bids. The dynamics would be interesting with OOC, etc.

I like this map, don't care who else is on there as long as VCU makes it. Could do with less Dayton posters, some of their fanbase can be insufferable at times.
