There was a piece of Hodor’s mind Bran couldn’t access. That’s said to be where the great other was hiding. And while they’ve obviously strayed from the books, this is something that has TOO much meaning to just completely pass over. Just by watching the show you know, and for good reason, WHY every single place is called what it was called...except Winterfell. Even if they don’t parallel the books or Martin’s exact ideas, they are going to bring something out from the depths of the crypts that nobody is ready for. They have to give more inclinations through the show of WHY it is called WINTERFELL (because that is the exact place where winter fell the first time around that they defeated the long night, and that is where they trapped it.)

No problem! And I’m with you in that it’s tough to bring out a completely new evil with 4 episodes left, but they have to do something to give the non-book readers some of that background on Winterfell. Winterfell has way too much hidden meaning for the writers to just leave the fans thinking they’re defending this place just because it’s where they grew up. “The North Remembers”, “There must always be a Stark in Winterfell”, and “Winter is Coming” I think all have a MUCH deeper meaning.

I do agree. My originally theory is they combine the great other, the night king, and the night's king all in the show. And given the cyclical nature of things they reveal it was the location of the original battle against the WW. Unfortunate and rather basic but again 4 episodes. Hope that if they combine the night's king and night king that it's the female WW who the night's king fell in love with that's locked down there. But again just my hopes for something even slightly more complex than "he wants to erase the memory of men which is me"

My original theory was the Night King took Dany, and she became that woman white walker, and in fulfilling the azor ahai prophecy, Jon sticks his sword through her chest to forge the blade that kills the Noght King (and in fulfilling TV drama, does not kill Dany but heals her back to human form). I like yours way better. What if, in their combination of the 3-Night’s King, Night King, and Great Other-the woman white walker is trapped down there, and that’s what the Night King is after, and together their power creates the long night that can’t be defeated. In theory, that was the real reason for the wall, to keep the Night King and Night Queen apart.

I definitely like the idea that together they can't be defeated but I have to imagine that either next episode or after Melisandre brings the fiery hand army (or at least the other two red priestesses) back from volantis that the WW will lose. Sort of a situation of despair and defeat till yay reinforcements (alla helms deep in LotR). I do think there's something being set up where sansas obsession about northern independence ends up not mattering so maybe a new wall around where the twins are or they break that bridge and the north becomes the permanent long night? Because the whole point is you can't defeat death (valar morgulis) and the night king represents death (in the show anyways). Sort of plays off of Berics "Death is the enemy. The first enemy and the last…The enemy always wins. And we still need to fight him."

The thing is, it’s not rarely spoken of at all the more you think about it. It’s literally what they say over and over and over and over. I just think we have been taking the words on the surface the entire time and we will actually see a much deeper meaning. The great other is winter. It is death. The entire series all they’ve said is “Winter is Coming” “Death is the enemy” etc etc.

Oh man I’m actually getting a little nervous for this one. I hope Brienne and Tormund survive so they can produce gigantic little babies someday.
