UPDATE - 8/29 (6:00pm): New Big East media relations chief John Paquette has clarified to VUhoops that the end-of-season rivalry games will change from year-to-year. So, even if Villanova closes the 2013-14 season with Seton Hall this year, they could be scheduled for Georgetown next season.

"[T]hat does not mean every team will have one rival -- or the same rival -- on the last day of the season," Paquette explained.

In effect, the Big East has only decided to make the last day of the regular season a rivalry for each school. Which rival a school will play, however, can change on a yearly basis.

Sounds to me more like they are trying to make the best matchups possible for the last game of the year, ie, the two preseason favorites whoever they are will probably be matched up against each other.

What? Why not just take it for what it says, they're not going to force the set of games they go with this year as primary rivalries. That doesn't mean they're not going to try to pick rivalry games.

Hmm if it's a purely this year rivalry I'm gonna say the two defending Big East champions (Marquette and Georgetown) square off

Per Andy Katz, Georgetown at Villnova will be the final game weekend.

Honestly, with the schools we have, these rivalry games could go a dozen different ways. If Katz is correct it's not hard to see why they chose these two. These are the #1 (Nova) & #2 (G'twn) in all time tourney wins of the 10 NBE schools, the only two BE schools who won a National Championship while a BE school, and they played each other in one of the most memorable title games of all time in 1985. Added to the fact that both have been to a Final Four in the past few years, have recognizable coaches and brands and both are expected to finish in the top half of the league this year, so the game might mean something. I kind of figured one half would be G'twn; thought they might play the MSG card and have them at the Johnnies. But as a fan, I'm obviously psyched to have this one last. I'll be there.
Go Nova!

So really they ended up only doing a single rivalry in the entire last day schedule, right? G'Town and 'Nova? I mean, none of the rest of those matchups are any kind of meaningful "rivalry" game, are they?
