I posted this in the other thread, but I'll say it again here:

I thought they were trying to match up teams that have traditional rivalries. DePaul vs. Marquette goes way back, and has the added Chicago/Milwaukee hatred. Butler vs. Xavier goes back a few decades, has been a pretty even series lately with a lot of fire behind it. As I understand it, Georgetown vs. St. John's and Villanova have also been around for a long time. Creighton just doesn't have a history with any of the other conference teams. That's why I think Creighton will get St. John's or Villanova (whichever doesn't get Georgetown) if the conference tries to recognize traditional, pre-existing rivalries.

Creighton vs St. John's as a rivalry game? Sorry, but not really seeing that one.

I don't know if I see it either. Maybe it's an East Meets West thing. Or maybe the 'Big O' Meets the 'Big Apple'. (Yes, I imagine this sounds ridiculous to someone from NYC.) But hey, one of the most iconic landmarks on the Creighton campus is St. John's Chapel. So at least we have that connection. I would think any Johnnies taking a trip out here would want to make our St. John's part of their photo itinerary.

I think you may want to recheck your history. Creighton and Marquette used to play pretty regularly before ESPN became such an active part of college basketball scheduling. On top of that, the schools compete pretty hard for midwestern undergrads. Creighton is loaded with kids from Milwaukee and Marquette has a ton of Omaha kids enrolled at any one time as well. In fact, It is pretty common for midwestern catholic families to have one child attend Marquette and one child attend Creighton. As a result, it will be pretty easy for the schools to develop a pretty strong rivalry as "brother vs. brother" sibling rivalry runs the deepest.

In the not so distant past, Creighton and Xavier played multiple series with one another until Sean Miller wouldn't renew the series because he got tired of losing in Omaha. There were several classic games in those series, including a New Year's Eve game (sound familiar?) that featured a shootout between David West and Kyle Korver that both fanbases still talk about.

To say that Creighton doesn't have a history with any of the other schools is absolute bunk.

Always my impression while at Marquette, as well. I knew a surprising number of students that were either from Omaha or had siblings at Creighton. They just seemed like the most 'sibling' university to us. This is why I think it is annoying when schools complain Creighton only got in because someone was on Marquette's board. I've been behind Creighton from the start partly because of my experiences at Marquette.

True story. I was visiting Creighton but had car problems in Iowa so pulled into Omaha pretty late. I couldn't find the hotel I was looking for and stopped by a grocery store to ask for help from someone in the parking lot. Turned out they had a kid at Marquette (friend of a friend, even). They didn't just give directions, they led me all the way to the closest hotel!

Come to think of it, I was paired with a Creighton student in a wedding party of a couple from Marquette, too!

The Creighton-Marquette ties go to the HS level as well, Creighton Prep's faculty seemed like the majority was Marquette Jebbies

I certainly have plenty of Creighton connections my Grandpa taught there my cousin teaches there now. My uncles on the board. My mom went there. Etc... I think the jesuit schools in the midwest have big bonds though thats what makes me want SLU and made me excited about having Xavier.

Did I imagine it? I thought we already knew Marquette was playing in Omaha on New Year's Eve?

That is a done deal. Everything else TBD.
